The 4th Annual Family Television Awards, 08.03.01 ...
The 4th Annual Family Television Awards dinner, honoring the best in family friendly television, was held on Wednesday, July 31, 2002 starting at 6:30pm at the Beverly Hilton, in Beverly Hills, CA. The Family Television Awards are the only awards created by advertisers themselves, to honor the best in family friendly programming.
GilmoreGirls.org staff member Katie and I arrived at the Hilton around 6:00pm and no less than 15 minutes later did guests start arriving. In fact, one of the first guests to walk down the red carpet was Marion Ross, who is most famous for her portrayal of Marion Cunningham in the classic television show Happy Days. Although, most Gilmore Girls fans know that she also played Richard's mom, "Lorelai the First" aka Trix, in the episode The Third Lorelai. Marion stopped to pose for photographers, greeted her fans along the red carpet inside the lobby, and then went inside for the awards dinner.
Twenty minutes later Scott Patterson (Luke Danes) arrived looking very nice in his black suit. After allowing photographers to take his picture, he also stopped for fans so that they could get in a few photos. He even said hello and chatted with some who were standing nearby the red carpet. Then, he was off to be interviewed by a camera crew that was waiting outside the dinner hall.
For the next hour, many different celebrities passed through the Hilton's lobby. Stars such as James Avery (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air), Jennie Garth (Beverly Hills, 90210), Jonathan Lipnicki (Jerry Maguire), Stephen Collins (7th Heaven), Beverley Mitchell (7th Heaven), Johnny Whitaker (Family Affair), Linda Blair (The Exorcist), Bryan Cranston (Malcolm in the Middle), and Dick Clark (American Bandstand) to name a few. Two of my personal favorites for the night, besides the Gilmore Girls cast members, were John Ritter (Three's Company) and Donny Osmond (Donny & Marie) who took extra time to meet and greet their fans. Katie and I even got to shake hands with and say hello to each actor.
Around 7:30pm Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) was dropped off, as most of the celebrities were, from a black Lincoln Towncar outside the Hilton. Once inside she, too, stood in front of all the photographers to get her photo taken and then said hi to fans as she walked by. Like Scott, she was also interviewed by the camera crew before entering the awards hall.
Katie and I stayed until 8:00pm when the staff of the Hilton cleared the lobby of all guests. As we were walking out of the Hilton toward our car which was parked across the street, we were lucky enough to walk right by Alexis who was standing outside. Although, someone in her entourage (of about two people) asked us to please not take her picture, we did say hi as we passed.
Even though this type of event was more of a photo opportunity than anything else, it was fun to see Gilmore Girls cast members. Hopefully next time GilmoreGirls.org will be able to ask a few questions to the actors.
The 4th Annual Family Television Awards honored recipients in eight categories for their contributions to outstanding family entertainment. The show will be televised on the ABC Television Network on Friday, August 9, 2002 at 9:00pm EST.
