Patrika Darbo Interview with GilmoreGirls.org, 04.30.02 ...

Named one of "TV Guide's Sexiest Stars" in 1999 for her role as Nancy Wesley on Days of Our Lives, Patrika Darbo is both an accomplished film and television actress. Born in Jacksonville, Florida, Darbo attended Georgia Southern College and the Theatre Atlanta School of Drama. She has since gone on to portray countless memorable characters on both the big and small screen.

With Patrika set to guest star in the Gilmore Girls episode Help Wanted, GilmoreGirls.org caught up with the actress to chat about her experience on the set of Gilmore Girls, how it differs from soap life, and memorable experiences in her career.

GilmoreGirls.org: With your busy schedule working on Days of Our Lives, how did you find the time to shoot an episode of Gilmore Girls?

Patrika Darbo: Every once in a while we have a couple days off in a row and it just so happened this was one of them. It's not a big part and I only had to work one day so it was perfect.

ORG: Is it a nice change of pace to go from portraying Nancy on Days to your new Gilmore Girls character?

PD: I love playing Nancy, but it's always good to work in another venue. To occasionally go from tape to film keeps your skills honed. On the soap, we rehearse our scenes, shoot, and move on to the next scene. On a film show you shoot the same scene over and over from different points of view. In fact, we spent over eleven hours doing my small scene. My close up, their close ups, master shot, long shots, etc.

ORG: What was it like working with the cast of Gilmore Girls? Did you get along with anyone especially well?

PD: I love the show and when I auditioned I offered to pay for the role. Of course that's impossible, but I would have done it. Everyone was wonderful. My scenes were with Lorelai and Rory. Lauren and Alexis were great and I also got to meet Yanic even though we didn't work together. I saw Scott as I was leaving and what a cutie. Also, I didn't work with Sally Struthers, but we met and chatted in the make-up room.

ORG: Would you be willing to come back to do another episode of Gilmore Girls?

PD: IN A HEART BEAT.

ORG: Not only are you recognizable as Nancy from Days, but chances are that people often remember you from your numerous guest spots on popular television shows; Roseanne, Growing Pains, Seinfeld, Married... with Children, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, the list goes on. Do you have a certain memorable moment that sticks out in your mind from working on one of those shows?

PD: When I did Roseanne, I was thrilled because I thought she was wonderful and I had a lot of fun. Even more thrilling was when I did the story of her life with Tom Arnold for the NBC movie of the week. I also did Growing Pains five years in a row and played three different characters. Plus, I did Seinfeld twice. The second time, Jerry requested me, according to my agent. Now that was thrilling! Other memorable moments include meeting Burt Reynolds, the Village People, Clint Eastwood, Sidney Portier, and Sandra Bullock. I have had and am having, a great time.

ORG: Do you have anything you'd like to share with your fans or the fans of Gilmore Girls?

PD: I know I don't have to say it, but keep watching. Also, drop the producers a line and let them know how much you love the show and let network executives know too. Keep "The Powers That Be" informed about WHAT YOU LIKE as well as what you don't.

GilmoreGirls.org would like to sincerely thank Patrika for taking the time to answer our questions. Remember, Gilmore Girls airs Tuesday nights at 8:00pm/7:00pm central on The WB television network and Days of Our Lives can be seen Monday through Friday on NBC.
