I think going on anti-depressants really depends upon the person. I knew one person who was on them, and when they got off of them they were happier with their life. However, I also know someone else who's on pills, and when they went off them, it wasn't good, I don't feel like sharing the details of 'not good', but I assume you can guess.

Well, the problem often is, that in the first few weeks, because of the change in your body chemistry, you're suppose d to be given a mild sedative, along with the anti depressants. Most GP's however don't do this, and so the suicide rate of people just starting anti depressants actually goes up.
Often people get worse after they go off them, because they tell themselves that they will, that they need to drug, and without it they're a disaster. Which is of course, not true. But because they convonce themslves of it, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, and they do.

I am not opposed to anti-depressents in all cases. As Shelby said, it depends on the person. For some people they are helpful and necessary. But i don't like the reflexive action of too many doctors in this country who too quickly choose pills as the solution, without taking proper time to determine if there is a genuine chemical issue or not.

Often psychologists have long waiting lists, and the docotrs have to choose between doing nothing, except putting them on the list and waiting, or giving them a drug. If they did nothing, and people were commiting suicide in the meantime, everyone would complain that doctors should give them something while they wait. Doctors aren't allowed to councell people. They hav eto pass them on to somebody else.

Giving people pills doesn't always stop them from being suicidal though. I understand that doctors have long waiting lists and doing nothing is a bad idea, but just giving them pills isn't a very good idea either.

No, it doesn't, but if they didn't people would complain, and they could get sued.

Clincical depression is a physiological problem. Therefore sitting around and talking about how you were abused as a child won't fix it. Wallowing in your problems for an hour a week will not magically multiply the number of wavering serotinin receptors in your brain.

See, I don't know. I've never really researched it, I'll admit that. But, I was diagnosed with clinical depression and I never went on meds. I was strictly one on one therapy. It helped me. Maybe it depends on the person

Well, that's the different between clinical depression and just being down on life, is you can tell in a persons' brain scan what their receptors are doing. I have researched it, to the max, and just did a paper on it!
