Too many people judge Jess by that first appearance. He was sent to live in some weirdo town away from his life and friends and you want him to be all happy? Damn, give him a break. ::)

I do agree with you about Jess blowing up at Luke in this episode. I think that's messed up but his mom was with another loser and he still had feelings for Rory, he probably just let off some steam. Yeah, that might not justify it but people sometimes do that.

I don't think he's completely ungrateful for everything Luke did for him. I think he cares about him. He went back to Start Hollow for his mom's wedding because it was important to Luke. If he didn't care about him and didn't appreciate anything he did for him, then he wouldn't have cared about what Luke wanted.

That was far from his first appearance, though.  And I guess that's how teenagers act when they love someone.  I agree people like him cuz they think he's hot.  I personally don't see it, but whatever.  He turns out good/more mature in season....5 or 6?  Can't remember.

^It's season 6. I'm not saying he got mad at Luke because he was or thought he was in love with Rory. I'm saying that it might have added to his frustration. Frustration can lead to anger and when people are mad they say stupid things they don't mean. If Jess meant any of what he told Luke, he wouldn't have thanked him for everything at the end of season 4.

I have to say at first, I was really mad at Jess for blowing up at Luke like that after watching it the first couple times but I saw it again recently and now I'm thinking Luke deserved it. He continued to bother Jess after Jess already politely refused a lot. Luke just shouldn't have pushed it.

So this episode is a true illustration of why Jess is, in fact, a jerk. Don't get me wrong, I'm in love with Jess as a character and for the potential that lived in the Jess/Rory relationship, but the way he totally came down on Luke for trying to "fix"things whether or not people wanted them fixed was totally uncalled for. I think Luke's desire to always make things right even when he's not popular for doing it is admirable...we should all aspire to pursue doing the right thing to such a degree. But of course, Jess isn't gifted in the communication department, so if he sees something going on that he knows is headed in a bad direction, his brain says "Not my problem." and he dismisses it. The outstanding reason why Jess decides to give Luke this speech is NOT because he's speaking with authority on behalf of every other person in Luke's life, it's just based on how he feels about Luke's involvement in his OWN life at this point. Later in the series we see a more grateful, humble Jess, but the Jess in this episode is only at the beginning of a long road of development, where he's still got a lot left to learn and a long road to get there. Jess was perfectly happy living with his mom and breaking all the rules and rebelling every way he could...he was getting his way 100% of the time, so of course he was happy with that. It was Liz that had the problem, so when she uprooted Jess from his very comfortable, have-it-your-way environment, and the reality that things don't always go your way set in, Jess started lashing out at everyone around him, and I believe that's when he turned a cold shoulder to the outside world and became the bitter teenager we see in this episode.

One thing that surprised me in this episode was during the scene where Lorelai comes home and Luke is drunk and trying to fix her window and cuts his hand. Lorelai is sitting beside him on the couch, trying to doctor up his hand with Barbie bandaids, and Luke is totally drunk...I was on the edge of my seat because I was expecting him to make some sort of profession of love, or at least gaze at her longingly and say "...you're pretty." No such luck! I was a little disappointed, I really expected something along those lines to happen here.  :-\

And who does Jess think he is to be the one running off every time he sees Rory? Rory explains it perfectly when she and Lorelai are at Babette's visiting. This is RORY'S town, and JESS is the one who left and screwed everything up...so if anyone deserves the momentary satisfaction of turning their back and walking out on someone in order to make a statement, it's definitely Rory. I love the way she handles it at the end of the episode, when she's trying to run away from him. I wasn't really all that surprised to hear Jess tell Rory he loved her, I was just shocked that more dialogue didn't ensue. I shouldn't have been, though. When Rory kissed Jess back in the day at Sookie's wedding, there wasn't much explanatory dialogue there, either. And in the episode where Rory sees Jess on the buss and we see after Rory gets off the bus that Jess has all his stuff packed and is leaving town, there is no dialogue in which they discuss the fact that Jess is leaving. The whole Jess situation, from start to finish, constantly leaves us on the edge of our seats, wanting more...which is exactly how Rory described the ideal relationship to Paris in the episode where she is helping Paris get ready for her first date with Jamie. Hmm.

Ok so I know this is so cliche now and that I say it like everytime I post on this thread but I watched this episode yesterday and seriously that moment when Jess says 'I love you' it's still heartbreaking, no matter how many times I watch it it's still like 'wow' I can't believe he just said that.

I've said this before and I'll say it again, Jess comes across as a jerk but really it's just because he has major communication issues and i know that because i'm a major Literati people don't take me seriously on this one but his speech about fixing things was his way of telling Luke how guilty he feels. he was saying all this stuff about making the guy he's fixing feel bad and that is Jess. Jess was trying to say that he feels horrible about what happened and he can't stand it. He was releasing everything he'd been holding in while he'd been away.

I like what you've said here. But isn't that the whole point? rory has to chose between Settling for Secure Safety or Spontaneous, exciting Love and Jess is the latter he brings that passion that raw thrill. She just has to decide what she wants. And you know what she turned down Security and Safety with Logan in season 7 so who knows? what about after season 7?  *cough* she goes to Jess *cough* hehe. Well I'm not a major Literati fan - I don't not like them but I'm a headliner first and foermost.  But I agree with you completely here Imogen.  It is so obvious to me that Jess has suffered with his relationship of trust, with those that he should be able to rely on no matter what.  And the way he communicates is just his coping mechanism - if he doesn't put himself on the line too much and turns it around on the other person then he feels like he's shielding himself a little.

I rewatched this episode last nightand for all of you who are effected by that last line from jess "I love you" I'm right there with you. It seems to me Rpry should have done something after that, question is if she wanted to. I mean a guy who leaves like that with no word of where he went is very angering. I'd love to know what her other situations for their last conversation would have taken place. I love jess, but in this episode sometimes i wonder how i can! Luke is someone i can relate too, a fixer. Don't you just adore the money that comes out of the car, you know its from Luke! I love that!

aside from Luke and his sister mending fences, I had no use for this episode.

Loved the final shot of Chachi Jr. driving away though. :D

Hmm.

Ok, he did hurt Luke there, but I don't think he meant to. It was just his way of dealing with the constant feeling of guilt for treating Luke so badly, for disappointing him, for quitting school etc. He was bitter and angry and that was his defence mechanism, a way to protect himself from feeling guilty, like Luke made him feel. He wanted to make himself look better in his own eyes, and by telling Luke "you're the one whose fault this is, you have high expectations and then when people fail you, they feel like they betrayed you" he blames his feelings on Luke in order not to feel so bad.

I'm not so sure about the other bolded thing. Are you sure he wanted to make a statement by leaving "demonstratively" out of the coffee place and the book store? Cause I keep thinking that he thought Rory wouldn't want to see him, and knowing that, he wanted to spare her the pain od talking to him. That "I'm leaving" he said, when she saw him at the coffee place, in my mind was more like a "Don't worry, I'm leaving, you don't have to talk to me." I don't think he was mad at her, cause, seriously, as much as I love him, the guy only made her suffer and he has absolutely no reason to be mad at her. ;D

The line from this episode I adore (apart from Gypsie's: "It's not her.") is when Lorelai comes all mad to yell at Jess cause he made Luke miserable:"Jess! You've been here 24 hours and already I wanna kill you." :D
Jess: Are you sure you want me to go? Cause maybe this whole thing can be solved between me and Dean if we just sat down, had a little heart-to-heart, he could tell me his issues, I’ll tell him mine…
Rory: Jess!
Jess: I promise I’ll speak slowly.
