haunted -deep words, deep true words!!!!
Jess doesn't just feel this way about for a year it's for like four years now!!!
I think that Stars Hollow does haunt him but it also helped him Stars Hollow was Jess' cure but it's like bread without butter. and Rory is that butter he's got his bread that's enough to live on but life just isn't worth it without butter- if you get what i mean!!
I love this episode and I hate it.
At a first glance this episode is great- it's got some great lines (e.g gotta handful of barbie- a solution would have been birth control too late move on- he's a grown man with an etcha sketch, well shake him real hard maybe he'll disappear) and it has some really good JJ and Lit moments too.
However when you really start to look into everything it's just another Tragic Literati Love Story. Jess is caught up on Rory and he opens up and tells her that and she just blows him off. And i think that deep down Rory is still caught up on Jess is this episode she just doesn't say anything because like in season2 she's been decieving herself so much that now she really believes that she's totally over him when really she's not. And Jess in the end is the one who ends up hurt so when people say that he hurts Jess really it's vice versa.
Jess got hurt real bad in this episode and i don't think he's healed just yet.

Rory definitely isn't over him in this episode. The way she is trying to avoid him and her face when she sees him and the way she keeps telling herself that "he'll be gone soon" and her speech when they finally get to talk at the end; all of it proves she is still hung up on him. She is trying her best not to be but it was so unresolved and open ended I don't think she really got a chance to move on or get passed Jess. Her face when Jess says "I Love You" is beautiful. You can almost hear her heart break. She does love him back, i think, but I think they both know that there is alot to be done before anything between them can be right again.
When I said Stars Hollow and Rory haunts Jess it isn't necessarily in a bad way. It's also his inspiration to be something better. It's almost as if he holds that time in his life up as the turning point. It's almost like the best and worst time of his life.

This is one of my favorite episodes from this season. I just loved Lorelai in this episode! She was so patient and understanding with Luke, firm and direct to Jess, and concerned for all the people around her. I also think she looked so beautiful when she met up with Luke at the bonfire. Her hair was so sleek and shiney and the way the fire highlighted her features God I'm so jealous  :P That little scene where Luke places the earrings in Lorelai's hand with the fire in the background warms my heart and I think it's gorgeous.

Also TJ and the etch-a-sketch.... come on! That was hillarious and then when Luke freaked out about that to Jess and Jess goes: "So shake him real hard, maybe he'll disappear!" I laughed so much.

I thought Jess was a jerk in this episode.  >:(  I was glad when Lorelai came marching up to him and pummeled him with the truth. :o Then when Rory was running away from him not backing down... she's showing strength.  :coffee:

7.1-Luke to Lorelai- "It's like my life isn't even real to me unless you're there, and you're in it, and I'm sharing it with you..."

in answer to Crackrobat's post I agree that there is no way she is over him yet and about the way she keeps repeating 'He'll be gone soon' is probably her just comforting herself because she doesn't want to admit that she is still hung up on him and she knows that if he stays any longer she would do something that would show that she still wants to be with him
Rory's face when he tells her he loves her is identical to the face I had on when I first saw this episode I was shocked even though everyone could see he felt that way since 'Dodger' I never thought he would verbalise it.
A classic episode and one of my favourites despite the hearbreaking final scene it has some amazing lines!!!

I don't know how I felt about this espisode.  I've been racing through the DVD's to get caught up to the end of Season 5, which is when I first discovered Gilmore Girls.

I really hate how Jess was so mean to Luke.  He could have been a lot less nasty and still gotten his point across.  Also, I loved how Lorelai was ticked at Jess and told him so.  I also love that she was really mad for Luke's sake not Rory's the way Jess kept thinking.  Gypsy is funny, "she sounds mad."

TJ and Liz are a little over the top, but cute.  I understand why he called Luke a dick but it was sad that he didn't see it from Luke's perspective.  However, a great opportunity for a great line from Lorelai.

I loved how Luke was plastered and how Lorelai responded to it.  Aaah, yes they are always each other's port in the storm.

He wasn't all that 'nasty'. For an argument with a teenage, angst ridden boy who has every right to be mad in this situation, I think it was pretty much standard response. I think Luke made it sound much more harsh in his summary to Lorelai than it actually was and once agian Lorelai, while I think it is cute her going out to protect her man, had no right to get in the middle of family business.

I love this episode so much!!  Also, I agree with the general consensus:  Rory is definitely not over Jess in this episode.  You can just tell by the way she acts, the way she wants him gone so she won't have to admit to anyone -- including herself -- that she still has feelings for him.

And, of course, the end where Jess tells her that he loves her...wow.  That's all I can say is wow.  I held my breath when he said it; it was so beautiful!  :hearts:

gilmoreatheart - It's the third episode in season five, "Written in the Stars."  Also, we have a Q and A thread here: http://www.gilmoregirls.org/forum/index.php?topic=7586.0 so you can get an answer faster next time you have a question.  :)

I actually disagree, i think that she was over Jess when he returned but just didn't want to have to face him again. As much as it pains me to say it, i don't think Rory ever loved Jess. I know when she talks to him on the phone at Graduation she says something along the lines of maybe loving him but the way i see it, you either love someone or you don't. If you have to think about whether you love them or not, then you don't love them.

I think Rory had too high of expectations on Jess. She kept comparing their relationship to hers and Deans and during their entire relationship she always seemed to put Dean before Jess. She had to run to Dean and ask him about whether he was in a fight with Jess even though Jess had already told her he wasn't and alot of the time she seemed more interested in being a friend to Dean then being a girlfriend to Jess.

Nat, in a way I agree, in a way i dont. I believe that Rory loved Jess, but you shoudlnt have to think about it. I think that she was smad he left and she wasnt sure whether or not to stay mad at him.

yeah I agree with you. I think she was definitly very smad and just waaay to made to know what to say and plus I think it would have been a bit hard for her to admit to him that she loved him even though he just left and it was a very emotional phone call. And I think that Rory really did love dean and she spent like weeks thinking about that one. Plus I don't think that even if Rory loved Jess so much she couldn't love him anymore than she did then she still wouldn't have said it that night at the festival because she was in so much shock that a)he came back b)he just chased her to have a conversation with her and c) he told her that he loved her.

HBW: Yeah, I sort of agree with you on Jess. I was mad at him for telling Luke, the only one who tried to stop him from being a failure, to p-ss off. He really hurt Luke's feelings, and there was no need for that. However, I understand that Jess is a troubled kid, and finds it hard to communicate with people around him. Maybe he wanted to be nice about it, but didn't know a better way to explain it to Luke?

It's funny how Jess kept running away whenever Rory wanted him to talk to her, but she was the one to run when he actually wanted to talk. I loved his "I love you". It felt as though he had wanted to say it for a long time, but couldn't say it because he's, well, Jess. I'm glad he said it, though. After three and a half seasons of devoted Dean-loving, I think I'm starting to like Jess.

To the first paragraph I'm totally with you it was a really bda thing to do and he totally shouldn't have done it but then I love what you said about him being a troubled kid who finds it hard to communicating. And secondly to the second paragraph ooooh yes you will convert to loving Jess lol!!

I think this episode is interesting but I also find it hard to believe that it wouldn't have affect Rory in any way. Because she didn't seem at all affected by it after this episode they don't even mention it in the next eppy that's it until Jess comes back 3 months later! I mean what is that all about her just shrugging it off like that ???

Jess was someone who had problems communicating his feelings, but he did not have any problem spewing his venom at Luke. He took one of Luke's best qualities - wanting to help people he cares about - and twisted it into a negative. I thought it was sad that Luke took it so much to heart and it took Lorelai to remind him that Jess was a messed-up kid. I loved that scene between L & L, with Luke drunk and miserable and Lorelai having a heart-to-heart with him.

So what good did it do for Jess to say the three magic words to Rory and then run off? Sure it took guts to say those words to Rory but he didn't follow it up with anything. Did he simply want to tell her for the sake of telling her, not expecting anything to come of it? I partly agree with Imy that there was no continuity in the following episodes, where Rory simply moved on without further mention. But what more could they have done with it? Perhaps she could have told the story to Lane in the following episode, but Jess was gone anyway.
