After now seeing all of the episodes of this show. I must say that if there was a moment that I think really encompassed the love between Luke and Lorelai. It was in the final episode and what Luke said to Lorelai. "I just... want to see you happy". His face and how emotional he was said it all and after all those years of not finding Mr. Right, broken engagements, bad relationships, and a misguided marriage. Lorelai Gilmore finally realizes that Luke Danes is truly the one man in her life.
It really does take a moment. After all, all of Lorelai's exes couldn't do what Luke could do.
Sure, Max bought a thousand daisies to profess his love for Lorelai. Alex could get her all the coffee in the world. Jason can help her annoy her mother. And Christopher can take on her spontaneous romantic dates, trips to Paris, and all that stuff.
Yet, none of them compared to what Luke has done. Everything else all those other guys did were fleeting. They were just moments that have come and go. It's Luke just serving coffee, making food, fixing things, being there for her and Rory, helping out at parties, dealing with her parents, and do smaller things I think really made more of an impact in Lorelai's own life than the rest of those guys can do. It was Luke's heart that won Lorelai over.
For Luke, he'd be incomplete with Lorelai and vice versa. There may have been a few women in the past but none of them were Lorelai. Rachel may have sparked him a bit along with Anna while Nicole shared her dislike of Taylor with Luke. None of them could be Lorelai. After all, Lorelai is the one person he could go to if he is having trouble with Jess, dealing with things surrounding his family, and even take her advice on certain things. If it wasn't for Lorelai, I think Luke would still be this grouchy, distant, unemotional diner owner with not much going for him. Because Lorelai and Rory, he gained a heart and the ability to be more open and accessible. Those girls meant a lot to him. Lorelai gave him a lot of things including the chance to be with his own daughter. Rory gave Luke the idea that not all kids are annoying.
For Lorelai. If Luke had never existed. I think she wouldn't have the stability that she had craved so long. She would end up being in one date, a brief relationship and another and another. It would just be continuous and unfulfilling. All she would have to stablize her is Rory. I think with a lot of those relationships, Lorelai gets a chance to act like a young kid but it would be fleeting and all of those guys she was with wouldn't be able to keep up her eccentricities or to put up with them. Plus, I think they would have a hard time fitting Rory into their life with the exception of Christopher in some aspects. I think Luke in many ways, grounded her a bit. Got her to slow down a bit. Make her feel more like an adult and find ways to have Rory in the mix.
Really, I don't think there will be a couple that is as enduring as Luke and Lorelai. Luke is pretty much the idea of what I think women would want in a man and Lorelai is the kind of person a man would want in a woman. They both bring the best in each other. He can put with her quirkiness, she can put up with his grouchiness. There's times that they fight and get on each other's nerves. Yet, it seems like they can enjoy getting on each other's nerves. Plus, they have something that I don't think anyone has in terms of having that great relationship and middle. By the end of the series, it seems like they're more compatible than ever. They have more things in common and more struggles. They both have daughters from previous relationships in which they can share their own happiness and anxieties in being a parent. Really, if there was a list of the great TV couples in the history of television. I'm pretty sure that Luke and Lorelai would be in the top 10-top 20 of that list. They're just that much fun to watch.
