I'm in the same boat as Rory, I'm not exactly able to do anything about it...now.  But I play Free Rice all the time (procrastination, but I can feel better about it...I'm getting smarter and also helping!) and there's not going to be a perfect world as I get older, so I can remember to not forget then!

I've been playing Free Rice almost since it came out in November...so I do believe I've helped at least a few people get a cup of rice.  :)

I think I've donated about 50,000 grains or something so far. A rough guess, so someone who's not so tired as I am, let me know how many cups that is?!!?

Will read some more later (I'm at work, and so should actually, you know, go work!!!) catch up on everyone's posts, it's good to see this thread is still getting itnerest.

As for beign too young to donate, it's okay, I'm sure there will be other ways to help out!!!

EDIT: I got emailed this from the cancer prevention guys.
Have only skimmed it, so not sure how useful it is, but anywho!:

Eric Ding posted an announcement to the cause Support the Campaign for Cancer Prevention Research.

----------------
Subject: Rally to Help Cancer Research Win a $50,000 Grant!

Dear CAMPAIGN FOR CANCER PREVENTION members,

We need your help...

All of you have been incredibly inspiring -- not only do we now stand as the largest Facebook campaign, but also the largest online cancer campaign ever!

However, we need your immediate help *TODAY*... critical cancer research is being threatened by government budget cuts - and as result many high priority cancer preventions and treatments are not being discovered.

*** Fortunately, there is currently a free $50,000 grant available on Facebook that goes to any Facebook cause that recruits the most number of donors in the next 3 days!!!

Here is how *YOU* can help... all we need everyone to contribute ANY SMALL AMOUNT -- we don't need lofty donations - rather only the SMALLEST bare minimum donation from each of you - to help us win the $50,000 prize from the Case Foundation.

==> To contribute and help us win the grant, please donate only at this following Facebook Causes site:

http://apps.facebook.com/causes/view_cause/47268?recruiter_id=1768

(However, please contribute TODAY or in the next 2 days as the free $50,000 grant opportunity will end soon and slip away. Also please only donate at the link above.) Thanks for all your help.

Sincerely inspired and grateful,

Dr. Eric Ding
Founder
(on behalf of the Campaign for Cancer Prevention - the 'OCampaign')

p.s. Our team of scientists and collaborators at Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health have been so inspired by everyone's passionate support that we are planning to expand our campaign in the next few weeks and months to launch the most innovative campaign for cancer prevention ever... It will also involve and need your participation... Stay tuned for more!

p.p.s. For the donation rally- you may read more about the $50,000 matching grant program and details of our cancer research via links on our rally site:

That would be about 7 cups. :)

That did sound good, but the time for donating is almost up, or am I misinterpreting? Maybe we could check out the other links he metions at the very bottom? But I am all for cancer research, too many bad things with cancer memories to not do something.

Take my hand and drag me head first, fearless.

I've been thinking how I could be part of this charity action and, being from another country I runned into an obstacle :-\ I want to help, but sending money is out of my reach, particularly because I don't have a job! And the difficulty of being foreign, I mean, I could donate some stuff, but send it to the US would be expensive and complicated...So, I thought that maybe, if the users liked the idea, we could make a charity community for each country, but the foreign users would have to their own thread themselves, and that way we can all help out! Is that too crazy? ??? I thought that, well for example, in my country, Argentina, I could make a thread and if the users from over here liked the idea of helping out, we chose who to help and we donate clothes, food, money, whatever we can in the name of the org!

Well, just a thought, if it doesn't work out I'm afraid I won't be able to contribute the donation :-\...
Let me know if it's possible!

Oh hai guys,  :V

I'd like to bring life back to this thread.  It will admittedly be a little hard for us to come to a consensus on what activity to sponsor or donate to, but we should at least try.  (In my humble opinion.)  Whether you can give $2.00, $20.00, $200.00 or just share enthusiasm and support .... I think it's worth revisiting and trying to accomplish.

Umm, okay, I don't do this for a living or anything, I don't know all the practical concerns

Nevermind, here it is.

When picking a charity, we have to consider that the org's fundraising potential is unpredictable in the first year. I don't doubt the enthusiasm of the org, we just need to know if an indefinite project is realistic. Limiting the contribution to a single or yearly donation for the time being allows a finite target and a flexible deadline.

We could also raise funds in the the org's or the charity's name, but we'd have to make our own posters and stickers. Or come up with sponsor packages.
Plus, that may involve filling out a form and registering somewhere, I'd have to look it up. We could also ask the fundraising office of whichever charity we hope to sponsor.

So the first two orders of business are to nominate some charities to vote for, and to generate enthusiasm.

A good nomination is the name of a charity, what you know about it, and why you think it's a good pick. Maybe it's a cast member's favorite, making them a possible contributor. Maybe it's a charity you already collect funds for or already had plans to pledge. Or even if you know an organization personally that's in need of help. Just throw it out there, what's your favorite charity?

We can generate enthusiasm the usual way - banner graphics, slogans, and clever jingles with org-related lyrics to the tune of popular songs.
"From the people who brought you the Gr8 Mandate, it's the Gr8er Mandate!"  Eh? Eh? Mmm, it's a work in progress, obviously.

Anyway, it's just a few things I thought might help get things started. I can't send much, but I pledge my lunch money to whatever the Gr8er Mandate develops into.

If nobody minds, I'd like to nominate Christian Children's fund, which offers many giving options, including targeted donation to education or disaster relief. They've had many recent initiatives to help pregnant women and educate midwives and birth attendants to improve infant survival rates, and I think they'd be a good fit since so many people have expressed an interest in sponsoring a child or a village in the future.

We could even name the gift after Sally Struthers. : )

That's a good organized plan, lessa! I think that getting the charity in order is an important first step. And like Heidi said, it might be very hard but we should try to get something laid out.

I was trying to think of a charity that might have more than one concern or area of interest within it so that if one part doesn't appeal to you maybe the other part would. However, that's harder than I thought. The purpose of charities is to focus on one thing to support and help as best they can. So, I haven't found much on organizations with more than one cause.

However, maybe we just start out simple, by listing what we really are interesting in - what tugs at our heartstrings - what gets us motivated to give and support?

We also have to realize that we may not be donating to charity that is our first pick, but it's helping something and someone. Unless you're totally against what the charity supports, giving in some kind is never bad. I think we should stay away from charities that support causes that might be more specific like animals or pro-life/pro-choice or environment even? They might be harder to get people to donate to for the first year. Charities that focus on feeding the hungry, helping kids, more global causes that aren't directed so much on political stance and values, might be good to try the first time? Just a thought. Does that make sense?

And, the holidays are right around the corner again this year. Perhaps we work to get something under way and do this as an opportunity to give rather than the secret santa? I know that everyone loves the secret santa each year but this might be fun and make people feel good too? Just an idea...

Just passing through, but I'd love for you all to consider the Joyful Heart Foundation. It was started by Mariska Hargitay to help survivors of rape and sexual assaults. They run retreats and events to help these people overcome their tragedy and it's an absolutely amazing foundation. Read more joyfulheartfoundation.org

I don't expect the ORG to pick this one but I'd like to share with everybody the charity I've done a little work for and continue to support - "Partners In Health". www.pih.org

The charity does a lot of great work in the country of Haiti in the Caribbean which is one of the poorest countries in the world. The charity operates a medical centre in the central plateau of the country offering free medical care to its citizens. The average Haitian earns $300 a year, less than $1 per day. Over 40% of people are so illiterate that they can't even write their own name. The country has recently been hit by 4 hurricanes, leaving over 1 million people homeless. PiH's free medical care enables people to get care that they could never afford, and so saves hundreds of lives.

There was a documentary about Haiti and PiH's work shown this week which was probably the most upsetting thing I've ever watched.

I don't work for the organisation or anything but I think it's amazing you guys have set up this thread. There's always going to be charities worthy of donating money too so I thought I'd add my favourite.

If you're interested in donating the link is http://www.pih.org/youcando/donate.html

And a small thing you could do is spread the word. If you're on facebook please become a friend of PiH! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Boston-MA/Partners-In-Health/17203056985

Thanks for listening!
