That's really awesome, and for those in the US, that's such an awesome thing, I wish Icould do it!!!
But I think (correct me if I'm wrong here!!) that the charity needs to be worldwide?
I'm not sure, I could be wrong, in which case that's really awesome. It's such a worthwhile thing, I know that people with special needs can really need/want someone to treat them well, and I think it's so great that that organisation is there!!
no that site is just for SoCal, my friend is raising money for the kids and she said she would love if you guys could help!!! Kids with special needs really do need help to lead normal lives and to have fun, it is a greaet organisation!

So, is your friend doing the walk, and trying to get donations? Just to clear up, is that what you meant?
Cuz that's somethign we could look into. Is it something that's ongoing, or is it just a once-off? (I"m sure I could find thsese answeres by reading the site in a little more detail, but I"m at work, so could only skim it, sorry, but it's really interesting!!)

It would be great if you could look into this organization...its only till March 30th i believe but there trying to beat there record over 742,000 and so far they have about 400,000 the donations would be amazing and the kids would just love it, i know they would just want to come on here and thank you guys and hug you guys!

Great work compiling a list w/ significant links to the show, Caryn.  They are all worthy charities, but one I liked better for a variety of reasons.  I liked First book - mainly that for as little as 2.50 can count as one book.  This way someone can contribute less money then an simple fast food order and still feel like they are doing something.  Also, it is related to education, another point that has been brought up AND  it can be measured.  Another thing that appeals to me about it is that I wasn't as familiar with it as the others on the list, so it might not be as popular as some of the others, and could possibly use a little more spotlight.  Just my  :twocents:, because all our worthwhile causes.

And another shoot out to freerice.com - I've gotten over 5000 grains to date and I just barely heard of this site near the end of this week.

Hey everyone,

I like that we are getting more ideas here and I think its awesome! I think its also a great forum to let people know what charities are out there and what you are participating in! I like the friendship walk thing, I try to walk every year for the Royal Childrens Hospital Appeal, its my yearly exercise ;D

Im glad that we have some Gilmore Related organisations getting mentioned! I had no idea about that phone number of Lukes!

Meanwhile, I am somewhere in the vicinity of 30,000 grains of rice (its hard to keep track when you do it on 3 different computers, hehe!) and I think I have done my bit with spreading the word to workmates and family. My volcabulary is much goodlier too!!! Hehe!

Meanwhile, at the restaurant my mum works at, they do a program with a group called Disabled Opportunities Victoria and they give people with disabilities a chance to work in a real restaurant, they are all so excited to get shifts, to get on the roster to them is a massive achievement! Anyway, they run a community garden and sell plants for fundraising and I managed to get my boy to give the left over seedlings from one of his trials to them so that they can sell them :)

- Got my finger in all the pies!

Hey everyone. Not much input on this, yet.

But I have this tidbit of info.
I didn't count, it was on this website:

Approximately 7,200 grains of rice are in a cup.

That is kind of sad.

But B has already donated, like, 4.1666666 cups. In comparison to how much those in need need to eat, thats a lot of rice. And on top of that she has a goodlier vocabulary.

Take my hand and drag me head first, fearless.

Thanks for gathering the list for us to review, Caryn! I'm up for doing any of those listed, however, my heart is in the Breast Cancer or John Hopkins organizations most. For personal reasons as well as that they are show related, so I'd be more apt to be drawn to those. I currently donate to a Children's Cancer Research Foundation that I've done for the past three years. So I've got that one covered, however, I wouldn't mind donating to this organization should that be what we decide to do as a community. I'm really anxious to find out what others think and to get this going!

I agree with you B, this is a great forum to share other fundraising opportunities and charities that you're into and are perhaps donating to. Other opportunities for others that may be looking for something to contribute to are always welcome! I think! I have learned a LOT about other places out there that are doing wonderful things in the world, just from coming to this thread. I hope that's not taking the this thread too far off topic. But I love having people share about charities and organizations that people are donating to currently. It also gives a little insight into what others hold important! Never a bad thing! :)

I have raised 15,500 grains of rice and I've only gone to the site but a few times...so freerice.com is being utilized and enjoyed!! I hope to get back there tonight yet...it really is a great one!

I love the Disabled Opportunities Victoria, B! I have a heart for people with disabilities (I work in a children's hospital for children with disabilities) and love that the restaurant helps them out! What a great way to give them a new look on life and empower them!! That's awesome!

I have just donated to a charity called Running Wild In The Night, a portion of a charity for the Convenient House, the LA Chapter. Nikki Sixx works very hard to support and promote this charity. They help homeless/ at-risk youth and get them off the streets as well as help them with resources to get somewhere in life. It's for the LA area but they have different chapters all over the country and the world I think. It's a great place and it's wonderful that they have someone who's dedicated to promote it, such as Nikki, someone in the public eye. He's donating a % of the book that he wrote, profit to the charity. The address is http://www.covdove.org/nikkisixx.htm if you're interested in checking it out. The whole organization is wonderful! I hope to one day start a youth center/ resource like this for the MN area. :)

Alright, well, back to the Org donation/ charity...I'm anxious to hear what other's think of the list that Caryn's compiled so organized and well, or to find out if there's something else out there that might be an idea. I'm super ready and excited this is taking shape!! ;D

Please read the Forum Rules and enjoy~

7200 grains in a cup!!!!!!!!!!!! Man thats what Wiki says and I trust wiki, hehe!! How Depressing! The thing that I found interesting though is that any site answering that question is directly in relation to freerice.com

Looks like the word is spreading through forums too!

This sounds like a really good idea.
I read about it while it was on the "Heidi's Soapbox" thread, but not much since it moved here. I wish I could donate, but being 16 I dont have any money to do that with.  :-\
I have used free rice at school and a little at home though, so I will continue to do that.
I hope everything works out well with this!  ;D
