...in season 6 when Rory began to act like Lorelai , Emily Got angry and said " when YOUR FATHER comes home we will talk about what you did "Â . . then Rory said : " you mean my GRANDFATHER !!! "
Also Emily feels she has lost Lorelai so She tried so hard not to lose Rory (although I admit I don't understant the definition of loss by Emily's dictionary)Â anyhow i was saying she needed not to lose Rory out of her pride because it will make her feel useless .
lol - i forgot about that Emily quote, a good one - and there are so many! Another thing it shows is that Emily would be destined to make the same mistakes trying to control Rory that she made with Lorelai. Emily is so stubborn and set in her ways that she never learns. And i totally agree about the idea of not wanting to feel useless. I forget the exact episode, but i do recall her talking about that, and how her life does not have much in it.
I think Emily's definition of "loss" has more than one meaning. One is losing control. I think the other is the "softer" side, where she really does need to cling to her family. That especially came up when Richard was sick. It also came up when she and Richard separated. As you mentioned on a previous post, she tried going through the motions of dating but knew she needed and wanted Richard; they are like two sides of the same coin.
I always got a kick out of watching Emily tremble in the presence of Gran/Trix/the Original Lorelai. The mere mention of Gran would cause panic in Emily. There seemed to be some kind of justice, watching Gran criticize Emily the way Emily criticizes Lorelai. I assume Gran's treatment of Emily existed even before Lorelai was born; it's possible it had an impact on the way Emily treated Lorelai, but i think more likely Emily was that way no matter what. I would guess that Emily's own mother was hyper-critical and controlling, and that Emily picked up those wonderful little traits from her. Too bad we never got to see Emily's own mother.
RICHARD: Lorelai, this is just beautiful. It's like something out of Architectural Digest. You should be very proud.
LORELAI: Thanks Dad.
EMILY: Your dress needs pressing.
LORELAI: Thanks Mom.
