I forgot about Blonde on Blonde! "Visions of Johanna" is possibly my favorite of many great songs on that one. There is a line in the song "Absolutely Sweet Marie" that goes, "to you live outside the law you must be honest." I always quote that line with a friend and we never seem to tire of discussing it. 

LOL - I'm not sure that I know the song, but that line is brilliant.  And a great way to do someone's head in.

I have noticed that "4th Time Around" has the same melody like "Norwegian Wood".  I think it was Dylan who decided to take that melody and into his own song as a nod to the Beatles.  He influenced them and they influenced him.  Makes sense.  Heard the Yo La Tengo cover of "4th Time Around" from the I'm Not There soundtrack?

Easily one of the best Dylan covers ever made and made it into my final list of the best songs of 2007. 

"Maggie's Farm" is amazing and it's one of the first ever "f*ck you" songs.  It was Dylan saying "f*ck you" to folk music. 

"I'm Not There" originally called "I'm Not There (1956)" is one of those famous songs that were made during those Basement Tapes sessions where Dylan is playing with the Band and he's just singing about this sad song about a woman leaving him and he's just making it all up as he goes along.  You can find that song now on that film's soundtrack.  It's easily one of Dylan's great, unreleased songs that is now out for the public to hear.

I listened to Yo La Tengo's version of "4th Time Around" on youtube and i like it as much as Dylan's.

I am aware of two covers of "Maggie's Farm" and they don't compare to Dylan's. The one by The Specials is ok but the one by Rage Against The Machine grates on me.

That sounds typical for the way Dylan and The Band wrote and recorded many of the songs on The Basement Tapes. So many of those songs are so-called throwaways and they are incredible. "Lo and Behold," "Yea! Heavy & A Bottle of Bread," "Please, Mrs. Henry" and many others. I've also read from one of the members of The Band how he and Dylan would take turns writing down lines for a song during the course of a day, each line picking up or not picking up logically from the previous line. Well, i'm pretty sure they were stoned at the time...

Dylan's voice is always a complaint of his detractors. I love his voice on his '60s and '70s recordings. Although i enjoy much of his music from the last ten years or so, i can hear why people are turned off by his voice.

He doesn't have a great singing voice in comparison to say Whitney Houston.

Yet, the way he sings these songs and the emotions that come through are enough for me.  I think his stuff since Time Out of Mind ranks up there with his legendary work and his vocals, though more gravelly, are still great. 

His voice isn't for everyone but I will take his vocals anyday of the week over today's pop singers that I feel is very manufactured and processed.  Which is why I'm so glad for a group like Fleet Foxes to come around.

And I also just got Grease (soundtrack) again! I love those songs! Such feel good songs!

That's about all for the 'pop' type music for me at the moment. I think what you said, Rupe, a few pages back about those differences in this thread is very true. Though, I'm an odd one along with Caryn, we're not young and don't listen to the 'tween music' that you speak of. I don't think I listened to that type of music when I was in my teens - but I was an odd one then too.

Rupe - I love the names of the bands that you list. That alone makes me check them out! So, keep posting your lists! I often think I listen to some bands that are more 'rare' and not so 'national' or whatever, but then I see the lists that you and Kupo post and think, nope, I've got a long ways to go. But like you said, to each their own. I like what I like and others like what they like. And this thread is for sharing what you like!

I have been in the mood for finding new music so I'm going to check out some of those bands that you listed. I find that I don't tend to like many 'indie' bands but am opening my mind even more. I

I'm listening to a lot of Slough Feg and Pete Murray as well as The Ramones (always) lately. I have also been listening to some old Pearl Jam...don't know why exactly.

Does your mood determine your music selection or does your music determine your mood? Hmmmmm....

Here's my review of the new Fleet Foxes record.

There's not enough to say about this record.  Especially in an age of processed pop as I'm glad there's something as organic and as American as this record as something so pure. 

I love Pearl Jam.  Great band and one of the few from the 90s that are still around and kicking ass.  Great live band too.  Saw them a few years ago and they were amazing. 

I also like ABBA, a group every rocker (including metalheads) likes to keep in the closet.  Grease soundtrack is a must-have.

Sooks, I think my mood definately determines my music selection.  Its funny, sometimes when I am in the car and rummaging through my cd holder I wonder why I don't really want to listen to anything in it.  That is because I was in a different mood when I changed out cd's.  As for the Dylan thing, I like him, but I guess not as much as some of you!  I work with a guy who is OBSESSED with Bob Dylan, its pretty funny.  I really like his cd that came out a few years ago...more kind of rock and blues.  I could not believe it was him when I first heard it!  Sooks, did you manage to check out any of those bands?  What do you think?

Anyone here like shoegaze music?

I already have a lot of recordings by bands like My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Lush, and Slowdive.  I'm planning to do a retrospective next month of sorts in celebrating shoegaze and review/profile albums of that genre with the exception of MBV (whom I've already reviewed).

It's kind of a thing I'm doing along with a fifth-anniversary essay project on Lost in Translation that featured the music of MBV leader Kevin Shields.

I know I have heard the term "shoegaze" and I think I like it, but I don't know if I have listened to the bands you have listed.  I have heard of all of them, just not listened.  Any other bands that might fit into this genre?  What would be a definition?  What about bands like Low, the Softies, The innocence mission?  Would those be shoegaze?

Hon dont take it personally that kind of music is just not his thing and he has made this know with how open he is about it all the time. Trying to change him is pointless.

Exactly.  I'm 27 where in your world, I'm like 40 or something which makes me a dinosaur.

I'm sticking with my NIN, Joy Division, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. 

Low, The Softies, & The Innocence Mission are not shoegaze.  The Innocence Mission is more construted as a dream-pop band in the same realm of the Cocteau Twins and the Sundays.

My Bloody Valentine to describe them as best as Sonic Youth & the Jesus & Mary Chain meets the Cocteau Twins and Brian Eno. 

That's pretty much the defining sound of shoegaze where bands just play droning riffs with effects pedals and whammy bars.  The term comes from the fact that they're always looking down and staring at their shoes at all times.

Not a very popular subgenre but one that is very influential.  Loveless by MBV is clearly the most definitive album.  It's so far ahead of its time.  Without that album, there wouldn't be such recent acts as M83 and Deerhunter.
