No thanks.  I've survived rap-metal and boy bands.

I'm too old to go into battles over other trends.  I'm just going to be in my world that's outside of the mainstream while looking out every once in wild.

I do like that Katy Perry song "I Kissed A Girl".  It reminds me of T.Rex in some ways.

Well, that song reminds me a lot of Marc Bolan.  Everyone has given a nod to Marc Bolan and T. Rex.  Prince with "Cream" and NIN with "Closer".

I detest rap-metal.  With the exception of Rage and early Korn.  The only boy band I liked was 'Nsync cause they had funk.

About 95% of today's mainstream music is terrible.  Everyone sounds the same.  There's always a flashy video.  Big production, always advertised for commercials and such.

Usually, I would just b*tch about it.  Instead, I surround myself with music that's not in the mainstream.  Especially the indie music of the late 70s to the mid-90s.  The record that's stuck in my head is the first album by the Stone Roses which I feel, is the greatest debut album ever made.  They never surpassed nor became the biggest band in the world.  Yet, that first album was extremely influential.

Anyone here likes Bob Dylan?

Couldn't agree more with this void  It's still on high rotation in our household.  And it also marks probably the most awesome era of my life so I really hold it in high regard.

I love Bob Dylan - wouldn't say I'm a huge fan, can't tell you much but always enjoy his stuff.  He's one of the musicians my hubby and I have on our list to delve into though - get the better albums (not necessarily the most popular) and so on.

Kupo - my hubby came home with both Grates albums yesterday.  I'm gonna have a better listen soon.  But they are grate ;)

I like Bob Dylan. My favorite albums include Highway 61 Revisited, Blood On The Tracks, The Basement Tapes and most of John Wesley Harding, Time Out Of Mind  and Love & Theft

Thanks Jim.   You just saved me some research to find out what the fans like as opposed to what the critics liked.  :)

I've just become a fan already have all of his albums from The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan to New Morning (with the exception of Self-Portrait.  My favorite is Blonde on Blonde though the one I listen to the most that I consider to be a Dylan-The Band record is The Basement Tapes.  I got the first volume of The Genuine Basement Tapes series and trying to get the rest soon.  I'm also trying to find the non-LP Dylan stuff and bootlegs while exploring some of the records he made in the 70s.  Including the Christian records he did.

I credit Todd Haynes and the film I'm Not There for getting me into Dylan as the soundtrack is one of my all-time fave soundtracks.  I realized that before Madonna, Cher, David Bowie, Prince, and Elvis Costello.  It was Dylan.

On a very different note.  The last record I just downloaded is the new Fleet Foxes album.  Wow... I highly recommend it.  It's like old-school, Americana mixed with baroque pop and old, American folk music.  It's so not what is being played on the radio and it's a breath of fresh air.

I forgot about Blonde on Blonde! "Visions of Johanna" is possibly my favorite of many great songs on that one. There is a line in the song "Absolutely Sweet Marie" that goes, "to you live outside the law you must be honest." I always quote that line with a friend and we never seem to tire of discussing it.

Sweet!  :D

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Bob Dylan, but he is a pretty incredible song writer, I'll give him that. I just can't get into it. Maybe I'll give him another chance one day...?

And also, I'd agree with the Fleet Foxes album. It is brilliant. The vocalist did all the harmonies himself. I thought that was pretty impressive.

Sig made by me, 'cause I'm awesome and unique!

My fave song by Dylan is "Like A Rolling Stone".

Everyone must hear that song.

I also love at the moment, "Goin' to Alcapulco" and "I'm Not There".  The latter was unreleased for a long time until this year, officially in the film's soundtrack.  I also love "I Want You", "4th Time Around", "Maggie's Farm", and "Visions of Johanna".

I love a lot of them.

^ Those are great songs, although i've never heard "I'm Not There." Ever notice that "4th Time Around" has the same tune as the Beatles "Norwegian Wood," which was released the previous year? I am addicted to "This Wheel's On Fire" from The Basement Tapes.

"Maggie's Farm" kills me, especially these lines:
No, I aint gonna work for Maggie's pa no more
Well, he puts his cigar out in your face just for kicks
His bedroom window it is made out of bricks
The National Guard stands around his door
Ah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

I have noticed that "4th Time Around" has the same melody like "Norwegian Wood".  I think it was Dylan who decided to take that melody and into his own song as a nod to the Beatles.  He influenced them and they influenced him.  Makes sense.  Heard the Yo La Tengo cover of "4th Time Around" from the I'm Not There soundtrack?

Easily one of the best Dylan covers ever made and made it into my final list of the best songs of 2007.

"Maggie's Farm" is amazing and it's one of the first ever "f*ck you" songs.  It was Dylan saying "f*ck you" to folk music.

"I'm Not There" originally called "I'm Not There (1956)" is one of those famous songs that were made during those Basement Tapes sessions where Dylan is playing with the Band and he's just singing about this sad song about a woman leaving him and he's just making it all up as he goes along.  You can find that song now on that film's soundtrack.  It's easily one of Dylan's great, unreleased songs that is now out for the public to hear.

Wow, I'm really surprising myself jumping into this conversation, but I think I have to, because I have an opinion about what you're talking about for once.

I kinda agree with Kupo (what's happening to me? lol). Dylan's a good song writer, but I don't really like him. If his voice didn't irk me quite so much, I might like him.
