Some revealing news on why the CW canceled the show:
From Spoilerjunkies (at Live Journal):
From SassyPaws on TWOP:
My Friend at GG has sent me more information regarding the issue that finally caused the network to end the negotiations...
The girls had agreed to a 13 week season with a very generous pay increase. All that was needed was the signatures. Then, after the contacts had been drawn up and approved by everyone’s legal team, the girls came back and told the network that they wanted to change the number of episodes down to 8. That was the deal breaker. It wasn’t worth it to the network.
All the more reason we keep fighting.
I've found Sassypaws's rumors to be less and less reliable as this whole thing has gone along, so color me extremely skeptical. No actors on broadcast shows have ever agreed to anything less than the front 13 for a shortened final season (Friends, Raymond, W&G), so I cannot in any way believe this rumor. Because reneging on a contract made in principle (ie: just waiting for signatures) for something that the network would clearly never agree to is negotiating in bad faith. Occam's Razor says to me that it was something else. I think that Sassy is a leaker from the network trying to play damage control given that it's been widely reported that The CW walked away from the table, not the gals.
Heck, the inital report by TV Guide's Stephen Battaglio in which he was the first one to state that The CW walked away from the negotating table appeared in the new issue of TV Guide magazine even though it disappeared entirely from TV Guide.com under mysterious circumstances. Sorry, but this is a case of who are you going to believe, a rumor or the evidence of Lauren's repeated statements, reporters' repeated statements, etc.?
