My name is Jason Byron-Danes, I am nineteen years old.

Krisleigh Cronkhite was a character made so I could write a paper for a course I'm taking.

I know that, after you've had discussions and formed a friendship with this character, you may feel betrayed, and I acknowledge you have a right to feel so. I am very sorry that I misled a fine group of people. I am sorry I dragged my friend into it.

Speaking of, you shouldn't be angry with her. Allison, known as Alice, or Alice Peters, by most of you, didn't know about the project until she came to the forum again and found I was tricking you all. I paid her for her services, and to stay quiet on the subject. If you have a signature graphic made by 'Krisleigh', you should probably change the credit to 'Alice'. She is a very talented graphic artist and never wanted to trick any of you.

I do want to inform you that the sympathy you may have felt for this character was not unfounded. The life of the character was led by the mother of my daughter, Janet. I have decided to end the charade both for the fact I have gathered the necessary information and the fact that Janet passed on April 20, 2006, at 04.17 in the morning Eastern time, after being hospitalized for complications occuring while her system was compromised from chemotherapy for cervical cancer.

I'm sincerely sorry that I had to betray you all, and I'm even more sorry that I dragged Alice into it. Alice is an amazing woman. When Janet left me alone with my daughter, Rikki, after she was born, Alice was only thirteen but she stepped in and helped me as much as possible. Rikki grew to love her, so far as calling her 'mommy'. We were like a family, in a way. When Janet came back a year ago, Alice simply stepped back and allowed Janet to assume her roll again, without question. She convinced me that Janet was the right choice, that Janet would always be Rikki's mother.

When Janet got in a car accident in November, Alice pled for me not to use it as part of the Krisleigh mythos, but I refuted her arguments. When I did, she did not tell you all the truth, as I had anticipated, she simply helped me. She helped me take care of my daughter. She helped me create the character of Krisleigh. She visited Janet in the hospital every day. When Janet was well enough, Alice took Rikki to the hospital to see her everyday.

When Janet's cancer was found, Alice took care of us even more. She handled paperwork. She filled out forms. She made appointments. She watched Rikki.

She made a few updates on an internet journal that I was supposed to maintain as Krisleigh. She cooked my meals.

In the end, I don't think she wanted to betray you either, I think she simply wanted to help me more. And she did.

For you, a banner as proof I needed Alice's help.

P.S. All those beauty tips in the beauty thread are courtesy of Alice and Mr. Fauxhawk, who was, in fact, a real person. Everyone Krisleigh referenced or mentioned was mentioned in their correlation to Janet.

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of Janet.  I do not feel betrayed, but I'm just curious about the nature of your project?  Can you elaborate any more?  I'm curious what you were researching and why you actually used someone elses identity instead of just creating a completely fictitious one.

Interesting story.  I haven't been on the board long enough to have felt any particular attachment to your character.  But hey, aren't we all characters?  We come up with our witty signatures, think of good screen names that aren't always our actual names; I think the internet has an element of anonymity to it.

I'd be fascinated to know about your paper, to see if you were researching the nitpicking, uber-obsessed GG fans that frequent the internet (people like me).

Plus, given that your last name is Danes, you should be allowed to be forgiven.

Although, how do we know that your current story is true?  I find you very articulate for a 19 year old male, which doesn't of course mean anything.  Hmmm.

Interesting, um, confession...
I'm sorry for your loss... if it is real.  You can't blame anyone if they don't believe your story, of course, since you really just professed a tendency to make stuff up.
Don't worry, I don't feel betrayed.  It's just an interesting and puzzling example of the anonymous nature of the internet.

Ho-ly shit!!!

Firstly I am really sorry for your loss Jason, I am kind of in shock at the moment but terribly intruiged. I hope you and your daughter are okay and pull through this. I am also nineteen and don't think I could handle something like your going through - you can always drop a line as yourself on the spree thread if you need to vent. But with a friend like Alice, I am sure you will  be fine.

Secondly. You are brilliant. I really thought Krisleigh was a cool gal and got my stupid jokes and everything. I mean if this was Janet's character then I am sure she was a feisty but fine woman. Well done, nice charade. the internet is a strange and wonderful place.

Thirdly. I still don't know if I am being punked a second time around... But, I do want to know what your paper is about. For what course? Psychology? Anthropology? Could you elaborate?

I agree. I think in someway we are all charcters. Although I have been here for a while I still don't see how this would change anything. We are all just people no matter if you are under cover as another person. You can be whoever you want to be as long as you are OK with yourself nobody elses opion should matter. We as a group are all here for the same reason, our love of GG and as long as that hasn't changed you will always be the same to me.

The paper was for sociology, a comparative study on how people react to face-to-face interaction with a person and how differently they act when they're using a variant method, such as the internet or the phone.

Goodby slutty pictures...

I'm confused. Slutty pictures?

I'm curious what you were researching and why you actually used someone elses identity instead of just creating a completely fictitious one.

There isn't a creative bone in my body. I've never been able to create characters. Or, really, much of anything. I had a short creative phase, but I discount it as it occured during preschool.

Interesting story.  I haven't been on the board long enough to have felt any particular attachment to your character.  But hey, aren't we all characters?  We come up with our witty signatures, think of good screen names that aren't always our actual names; I think the internet has an element of anonymity to it.

I suppose that is one way to look at it, but I think a lot of people are just being themselves. I know a lot of people who are very open about themselves in real life and on the 'net.

Plus, given that your last name is Danes, you should be allowed to be forgiven.

This is going to haunt me forever, saying this, but my brothers name: Dan. My cousins name: Milo.

Although, how do we know that your current story is true?  I find you very articulate for a 19 year old male, which doesn't of course mean anything.  Hmmm.

You don't. Actually, after I posted this, I made Alice go through and fix all my mistakes. I'm not articulate or intelligent or much of anything, she is. So, if you want to be clear, this is being fixed and tweaked by a 16, almost seventeen, year-old-girl so that I don't sound like an illiterate crack hobo. I don't know how much sense that made, so Alice'll fix it.

Interesting, um, confession...

I understand that, you not believing it. I come out, tell everyone I've been lying to them, and then tell them something else. I don't know if I'd believe me. To be clear, though, I didn't actually profess a tendency to make things up. I did this for a my paper. I actually don't like lying, makes me feel like a creepy old man. Coming onto a chick forum and pretending to be one.

I think we'll make it. Family and friends have been really amazing. Rikki, my daughter, is only three, so she doesn't really understand it, but she knows somethings wrong and she's, understandably, upset about it.

Secondly. You are brilliant. I really thought Krisleigh was a cool gal and got my stupid jokes and everything. I mean if this was Janet's character then I am sure she was a feisty but fine woman. Well done, nice charade. the internet is a strange and wonderful place.

I think Krisleigh was a nice mix of Janet and myself. Janet's worldly history, but I put a lot of my own understanding into it. So, really, it was just a creepy guy who got your jokes instead of a cool gal. Janet, herself, was very vivacious and effervescent, but I don't think I put so much of that in there. She was a great person.

Thirdly. I still don't know if I am being punked a second time around...

I understand that, and I know that no matter what I say, it's not going to be easy to accept, so I'll simply say that I'm telling the truth because I was threatened with great bodily harm if I didn't. And the loss of vital organs.

I agree. I think in someway we are all charcters. Although I have been here for a while I still don't see how this would change anything. We are all just people no matter if you are under cover as another person. You can be whoever you want to be as long as you are OK with yourself nobody elses opion should matter. I tape it every week, so I'd say I'm still a fan.

First of all I am sorry for your loss. I don't know a lot about what you're talking about but I did think Krisleigh was in the hospital and I did send my well-wishes. While I am not the type of person to like being lied to or tricked I do believe in forgiveness.

Wow, I feel really manipulated.  And I don't think of myself as a "character" on here; I'm me, and I guess I'm naive in assuming that everyone else is themselves as well.

I think, too, there's a difference between not promoting certain things about yourself on the internet so that creepy people can't locate you or know too much about you, and outright lying to create a persona.  I did go back and read a few of the posts (e.g. about Krisleigh's accident) and found them distasteful because they went beyond the norm, and I think were unnecessary for a sociology paper.  Clearly there are some ethical issues with the research that need to be sorted out.

Jason.  My question that since you answered that you are still a fan, will you continue to a poster &/or create an alternative identity as a male 19 here.  Or will you just drop off the face of the ORG earth so to speak?
