1  Gilmore Girls / General Discussion / Re:'s Veronica Mars?! Contest: Win a season three DVD set! on: October 27, 2007, 02:59:42 am
I absolutely love Lorelai Gilmore for many of the same reasons you'll see below, but my favourite female TV charcter has to be Veronica Mars.  First of all, because she's just so smart - none of the helpless female heroine here, just bad-ass, down to business, tough Miss Mars attitude.

Also, Veronica's got this incredible ability to bounce back, no matter how many appalling curve balls life invariably throws her.  It's such an inspiring thing, in a totally non-cliched way, to see someone take so many knocks, and for her to get up, a little damaged, but still strong enough to deal with it, every time.

The other most important thing about Veronica is her wonderful support network - she is so independent, and self-sufficient, but occasionally when things get too far on top of her and she has to finally look for help, she's not afraid to; even though Veronica's strong on her own, she's willing to ask for help and support when she needs it, and that's really something.

I'm having trouble at this point expressing just how ANGRY I am.

I find it unfathomable that the CW and Dawn Ostroff have cancelled not only Gilmore Girls, but now the one show that I felt came anywhere NEAR Gilmore Girls in terms of quality - Veronica Mars.

There just aren't WORDS to tell you how frustrating, how appalling, how incomprehensible this whole thought process of the CW's has been (see, I'm trying and the words come out big, complicated and confusing).

I'm in Australia, and have just gone out and bought enough airmail stamps to send snail mail to the CW about both Gilmore Girls and Veronica.  Because I'll be DANMED if the CW expects that they can IGNORE the fans long enough that we'll just go away.

Morons.  They're all morons.

Hey All,

I just headed to Ausiello's page and the Ausiello report's titled Gilmore Reunion Movie in Works?

Maybe, just maybe, good-ish news?Huh'

I mean, it's something, right?

Hey All,

I got a reply from David Kronke in response to an email asking if there was anything he could do to help get word of the fans' support for season 8 out there, especially in light of the "cancellation." To be honest, I'm not feeling great about it:

I think you can pretty much stick a fork in it; it's over. If there had
been any chance of the show coming back -- and of The CW desperately
wanting it back -- negotiations would've gone down to the wire, to the
morning of May 17 when the network announces its fall 2007 schedule, if
need be.

Two things killed the show in my opinion:

1) Alexis Bledell was never going to come back to the series in any
meaningful way. She had pretty much checked out already this season.

2) The show had tumbled significantly from its ratings high of 2 or 3
seasons back, when 7 million people were tuning in. This year, it's
been around 3.5, 4 million viewers a week. There might've been a mild
uptick next season for those projected 13 final episodes, but probably
not significant enough for either The CW or Warner Bros. TV to pony up
what would've been no doubt significantly more money. The show will
make money in perpetuity, as it is -- 7 years is way more than enough
to play in syndication forever; paying more for a season eight actually
would've reduced the show's profits.

Anyway, Amy Sheradon-Palladino has a pilot at Fox; maybe it'll come
close to "GG" and get picked up.

I'm sorry to be such a buzz-kill for you, but honesty tends to be the
best policy. I hope you find a new show to rally behind.

Thanks for writing,
David Kronke

Sooo... That seems to suck.  Just one opinion, true, but unfortunately these sorts of opinions about GG's fate seem to be stacking up...

On another note, ShutUpRob - I went through the posts and as far as I have seen ChocolatGilmore, divine, CathyCoffee and luvsGG have all sent daisies of their own accord thus far.  Heidi also mentioned that she's heard of others who had sent some.  Aside from this, lots of Mandaters have sent money to the Great8Mandate daisy fund.
5  Gilmore Girls / General Discussion / Re: The Great8Mandate on: May 04, 2007, 10:44:56 pm
Hey Everyone,

So, this sucks.  But, to echo the awesome spirit here, It ain't over till it's over.  I'm loving the daisy idea, will be doing everything I can from here.

Also, it was a while back, but does anyone else remember David Kronke's support of the idea of a Season 8?  He wrote an article, even replied to email we sent him (gasp!)?  I've sent him a note, just in case.  Anyone who wants to do the same, please do - any publicity we can get on our side is helpful...

This is what I sent - to the point, just looking for any support.

Mr Kronke,

I'm writing to you again as I'm sure you've heard by now of the Gilmore Girls' cancellation.

Needless to say, I am one of multitudes of fans vastly unhappy with this decision.

Fans the world over, particularly those involved in's Great8Mandate have not given up - the fight's not over until all hope of a Seventh Heaven-style revival is gone.

If there is anything you could do in the way of publicity for this fight, even to email the network like the fans are, or to spread the word that the struggle to save this exceptional show goes on, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for anything at all you can do.

With determination,

Jocelyn *****

OK, let's get this show back on the air!!

Seasons 8 AND 9:  Because Joss hasn't written the musical episode ("Once More, With Caffeine") yet. - hehe. Damn Right ShutUpRob!

Going back to the first ever episode of GG - Rory and Lorelai have a fight, then both wallow with Macy Gray's "I Try"  In true Gilmore Girls' style, it's a song loved by mother and daughter?  Just a thought.

Also, I'm with Heidi here - if this CD is gonna happen, it has to be soon...  It can be done though!

Oh, and on the side... I'm a mad VM fan as well as a mad GG fan, so that news from ShutUpRob sucked!!  But by GOD. I'm gonna do my darndest to get at least ONE of the BEST SHOWS ON TV BACK!!!

Mandate for your life!!! ... Or at least your sanity (mine, anyway)

Oh my god, that's awesome!

And no-one else was close, GG and VM were miles ahead!

8  Gilmore Girls / General Discussion / Re: The Great8Mandate on: March 25, 2007, 01:33:10 am
Hey Guys, just wanted to check in. It's all looking good, I'm almost painfully optimistic!

Something I wanted to weigh in on though is the VM bashing rearing its head on this forum.  Really, just because you feel so strongly for one show does not make it right for you to criticise other shows - and to personally attack their audience!

As a rabid GG fan AND a massive fan of VM, I really resent the generalisation that all VM viewers who are pushing for the show's renewal are doing so because they are "twelve years old" and don't have any more imagination.  I personally believe that Veronica Mars is one of the most innovative and highest quality shows to be made in a long time - SINCE THE INCEPTION OF GILMORE GIRLS, IN FACT.

So guess what?  I'm an educated, opinionated and passionate 20 year old who has the mental capacity to choose which shows she loves, and which shows she wants to fight for, WITHOUT feeling the need to denigrate the choices of other viewers.  I FULLY support the Great8Mandate's mission, and would be thrilled with another season - or ten - of Gilmore Girls, but felt the need to establish that it's entirely possible and in fact understandable to be enthusiastic about more than one show.  VM fans, and in fact fans participating in campaigns to save any show they feel is worthy, are ENTITLED TO DO SO WITHOUT BEING ATTACKED.

From Jocelyn, who'll ALWAYS be pushing for more Gilmore Girls.

Hey Sarah,

That's a great letter - and the most important thing is that we're SENDING letters at all. I like all the questions that quickly put all the unfinished issues into your letter.  Having them all together like that really puts into perspective how much there is left to see.

Bring on St Patrick's Day - We'll show them all!

*jiggles in excitement and some terror*
10  Gilmore Girls / General Discussion / Re: The Great8Mandate on: March 15, 2007, 12:07:42 am
Hey all,

I'm back!  Well, I've been keeping up and still sending letters etc so still here.  Another possible template if anyone wants help getting started - this one's geared towards Alexis:

Dear Ms Bledel,

I am one of multitudes of long-term Gilmore Girls fans around the world.  In Australia, as in the USA, this show has found an enthusiastic and loyal audience in every age group, from grandparents to teens, all of whom look to this fantastic show for laughter, tears, and joy.  With no exaggeration I can confidently label Gilmore Girls as one of the best shows on television.  This is due to its consistently high levels of acting, writing and commitment from everyone involved in the show.  It has been both a dear pleasure and a privilege watching Rory grow up into such a woman, and watching all the characters develop into the wonderful personalities we see today.

It is abundantly clear to me, as to all your fans, that you have a long and successful career ahead of you, in whatever projects you take on - especially if we have anything to say about it.  I look forward to following your work for many years to come.  Just as important as the future, however, is the past - and making sure that the past has ended up the way it ought to.

Gilmore Girls can never be a finished story, as characters as rounded and full as these will always have more to do, but they deserve the chance for an ending that is as well thought out and fully explored as the rest of the show has always been.  The incredibly bittersweet relationship between Lorelai and Luke is a prime example of a storyline that has been around as long as this show has, and that deserves the chance to be finished with as much care as necessary, and the subsequent time that it so clearly merits.  Similarly, it would be an intense disappointment if, having experienced with Rory the hurdles she has had to overcome in the path towards her dream of one day becoming a journalist, someone who just wants to be sure she sees... something, we were denied the opportunity to 'be there' as she finally realises her dream.

Gilmore Girls will never be over, not completely, but as it stands at the end of Season Seven, it is also unfinished.  A show this well made, well acted and well loved deserves a proper ending.  Please at least consider the importance of returning for a Season Eight.

Yours Sincerely,

Awesome, thanks so much Caryn.  Just wanted to be able to actually say Ive done something for a show I love - but you all get that too, hey?

I have added more threads at various message boards, so if anyone can head there to check them out and/or post replies that would be great.  Addresses follow:

Me again,

Just posted a message referring to the Great8Mandate here at the IMDB.  A lot of fans chat there, am looking for other places to post also?

If anyone has posted messages on other boards please keep posting addresses here, I think it'd be agreat idea for the rest of us to follow those links and to reply to messages posted anywhere we can - the more messages in each place the better again, right?

Hey All, I've recently discovered this site and think the Great8Mandate's awesome - if only more shows put in such an effort... Although if they did this wouldn't have as much of an impact, so yay!

I'm in Australia, so have emailed so far, and am hoping to send hard copies of letters to the cast over the next week.  If anyone's looking for a template?  I thought I'd offer the one I put together, to try and help:

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to you as a concerned Gilmore Girls fan, to express my support for an eighth season of this fantastic show.

From the first season of Gilmore Girls I have been one of the multitudes of fans amazed by its quality.  The attention to detail, in particular, makes and has always made this show one of the finest and most consistent on television.  It’s no secret that Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino had been widely acclaimed as one of the finest writing teams in recent times, and season seven is fast establishing David Rosenthal and his team in the same tradition.

I am certainly not alone in recognising the actors in Gilmore Girls as such fine talents that they are always delightful to watch.  The stunning Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, Scott Patterson and Melissa McCarthy deserve particular mention for their ability to pull the viewer in and make them completely a part of their lives, and of Stars Hollow.  This is not, however, to discount the wonderful supporting cast, including but not restricted to Liza Weil, Matt Czuchry, Keiko Agena, Kelly Bishop, Yanic Truesdale, Sean Gunn, and Edward Hermann.  Just the fact that these characters and their portrayers have integrated themselves so flawlessly into viewer’s hearts for the past seven seasons could be enough justification for an eighth.

The fantastic writing and characters are not the only reasons for this show’s unique, unwavering quality, however.  Stars Hollow has created a magic of its own in its ability to make the viewer feel like this is a place they want to be.  As mentioned above, the attention to detail is what really sets Gilmore Girls apart from the mass, and the town of Stars Hollow is one prime example of this.  Every character, whether we meet them for an episode, a season or just for a minute, has a legitimate place in the lives of the Gilmores.  From Kirk and his desire to work in every capacity possible, to Mrs Kim and her extended Korean family, the smallest character role is rounded out more convincingly than many leading characters’ on other shows.

Such superiority in every aspect of the show speaks for itself, but as an avid supporter of the Girls, I felt the need to speak up on the show’s behalf as well.  The characters that we have come to know and love, the places we feel a real connection with, should be given the opportunity to fully finish their stories, and for this they need more time.  For their stories to be properly finished they need an eighth season.

Gilmore Girls deserves to be brought back for a stellar eighth season.

Christopher: “This town is like one big outpatient mental institution.”

Long live Stars Hollow!

Yours sincerely,
