MUHS Guild Honors Best of '03, 1.20.04 ...

Some 900 guests were in attendance to watch as the makeup and hair styling teams behind Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and TV's Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls each walked away with two awards from the Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist Guild. The awards were presented at a black-tie gala on Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Pirates of the Caribbean was awarded the Guild awards for Best Period Makeup in a feature film and Best Character Hair Styling for a feature, while The Return of the King's teams won prizes for Best Character Makeup for a feature film and Best Special Makeup Effects for a feature.

On the television front, HBO's Sex and the City was honored for Best Contemporary Makeup for a television series and Best Contempory Hair Styling for a series. The WB's Gilmore Girls was recognized for Best Character Makeup for a television series and Best Character Hair Styling for a series.

Other feature makeup and hair styling awards went to Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle for Best Contemporary Makeup for a feature, Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde for Best Contemporary Hair Styling for a feature film and The Last Samurai for Best Period Hair Styling - feature film.

NBC's American Dreams walked away with the prize for Best Period Makeup for a series, and HBO's Carnivale won the award for Best Period Hair Styling for TV series. The Nip/Tuck pilot earned the Best Special Makeup Effects for television.

Awards were also presented for movie of the week or miniseries, and Tracey Ullman in The Trailer Tales won the award for Best Makeup while HBO's Normal was feted with the Best Hair Styling honor.

For a live theatrical performance, Wicked was cited for Best Makeup or Hair Styling.

The MUHS Guild also presents three lifetime achievement awards each year. This year Nicolas Cage was awarded the MUHS Barrymore Career Achievement Award, recognizing an actor or an actress whose work has had an impact on the artistry of hair and makeup in the entertainment industry. In addition, Lucy Liu presented Colleen Callaghan the Lifetime Achievement Award in Hair Styling, and Tom Hanks presented Daniel Striepeke the Lifetime Achievement Makeup Award.

The 1,700 active members of the MUHS Guild voted on the winners of the fifth annual outstanding achievement in feature film and television awards.
