Townies Gets New Life on Web, 10.30.01 ...
The short-lived 1996 sitcom "Townies" will soon be coming to a browser near you.
Carsey-Werner, which produced the ABC show starring Molly Ringwald and Jenna Elfman, has signed a licensing agreement with Yahoo! to put episodes of the show on the Internet, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Other Carsey-Werner material, including interview clips, classic commercials and possibly other shows, is included in the deal as well.
"Townies," which starred Ringwald as a waitress in a Massachusetts fishing town, never found the audience ABC wanted. But several people in its cast and crew have since become stars, including Elfman ("Dharma & Greg"), Lauren Graham ("Gilmore Girls"), Ron Livingston ("The Practice," "Band of Brothers" ) and head writer Linwood Boomer ("Malcolm in the Middle").
Robert Raleigh, head of Carsey-Werner's new eDistribution unit, says he's confident "Townies" will be successful online. "This is one of our most significant deals," he says.
