JIM - Thank you for agreeing with me.  That is how I see it.

SIDNEY - we will probably never agree, but that is okay.  You like Lorelai with Christopher and I like Lorelai with Luke.  Yes, there are a few things that I would like to change about Luke, but I stll like Lorelai with Luke more then with Christopher.

I know we all c the "perfect"guy 4 lorelai and but it seem 2 me alot of people r java junkies. im happy 2 say that im NOT one. im a balcony buddy all the way but she had 3 guys that was serios with and i hope that my opinons won't make people mad. but i have a feeling they will.

Chris and lorelai~ 2 me this is best couple possible. They were perfect high school sweethearts and they were both romantic and freesprited, rebals 2. I think lorelai made the right choice 2 not get married when she found out she was having a baby because i think u sould get married because u love each other not because of a kid. even though chris can b inmature, he still wanted 2 marry her and b there 4 her always and i think that is so romantic.

Max and lorelai~ this was an ok couple. max and lorelai had rocky time but they were in love, untill lorelai got a wake up call. is this the guy u what 2 spend the rest of your life with?? and marrying him just wasn't right. but 4 awhile it was love.

Luke and lorelai~ Bad match!! luke wasn't romantic or a rebel. he stayed in one place all the time and never left (if u know what i mean) Lorelai is spunky and sassy and wants a good time and i felt like luke couldn't bring that 2 her. lorelai needed someone who could b crazy and do what she wants. i think they sould have stayed friends and nothing else.

Of course!  A huge majority favors Luke & Lorelai... Danes.  Or Luke Danes & Lorelai Gilmore-Danes.  I prefer the latter.

I loved Lorelai with Luke, that just seemed to fit each other perfectly. I hate that they split them up in Season 7. But I thought Lorelai and Max were quite sweet too, but its definitely Luke and Lorelai for me. They just worked  Cheesy

I liked Lorelai with Max because he was a cross between Luke and Christopher in his actions and class standings.  He was romantic buy not overboard and he was a bit of a home body and liked to cook.  He wasn't in the rich class even though he taught them and knew about them, but he was college educated and had more class than Luke.

I liked Lorelai with Christopher because he was romantic and fun and would do anything for her.  He just never really grew up.  Not even after he had to had to raise Gigi on his own.  Plus I didn't like the way that he was pulling her back into her parent's world.  I was so happy when their marriage, which he forced on her, ended.

BUT, I liked Lorelai with Luke more because even thought it took him forever to get the nerve to ask her out, he did love her for a long time and he really knew her and accepted and loved because of the way that she was.  He was always there for her and Rory when ever they needed him.  Well most of the time.  Yes, he had faults.  He wasn't romantic and he didn't really have a lot of confidence in himself outside of his world at the diner.  Once he was with Lorelai, he did start to change and have more confidence in himself and for awhile in his relationship with Lorelai.  Even though there are some reasons why I think Lorelai could have done better than Luke, right from the pilot we all knew that they would be the ones to be together and that is the way that I think it should be.  Even with all of his faults, Luke is the one who was more in love with Lorelai and really knew her the best.

I can't really write it out the way that I feel, but I think you can get the idea.  I hope.

I think that Max was Lorelai's best boyfriend during the series for several of the reasons that cherilee said. I think that as a couple they had better chemistry together than Lorelai-Luke or Lorelai-Christopher. It was a shame that their relationship was so short lived.
Don't get me wrong, Luke is one of my favourite characters from the show, but I preferred him as a friend to Lorelai, with him constantly doing favours for her and their awesome diner banter, rather than as a boyfriend or fiancee. Obviously they got back together in the final episode. For me it was imperative that they at least ended the series as good friends again.
It's a similar story with Christopher. I liked the guy and I preferred it when he would occasionally drop by Stars Hollow to check how Rory and Lorelai were doing. Of course it was vital that he was major part of both of their lives. As a friend to Lorelai he was great, but as anything more than that, hell no.
Lorelai and Christopher were a horrible couple in season 7, with them sucking the life out of each other (although DR allowed the wheels of their relationship to fall off the wagon far too quickly in my opinion).
Jason was by far the worst of her boyfriends. What an annoying waste of space that character was.

I like how Lorelai and Luke were in early seasons. I liked when they started dating. It was so romantic and seemed like they were meant to be but all that was ruined by the sixth season. I really don't feel as i used to about them. Luke became a very sickening character to me.
But if you compare that to Chris, no matter how many times he screwed up, he and Lorelai always found a way to be friendly again. Lorelai and Luke were very strange in the last season, they hardly said a word to each other. But with Chris, they get divorced and a couple of episodes later, they are so cool with each other. Their whole relationship says "no matter how many time we screw this up, we will find a way back". Now that is meant to be.

If the season 7 writers did one thing right with Christopher – and it was just about one thing – they did show his true forgiving character.  Of all the characters on Gilmore Girls, even Rory, Christopher was the most understanding and forgiving.

Given that the Palladinos claim that they were so "meticulous" in crafting their storylines, it's interesting to go back and look at the destruction of the Christopher character and how wild and erratic it was.  In the pilot, Amy had written him as a lawyer.  Richard calls him "smart" in the early episodes – and unless Richard is just being cruel saying it to taunt Lorelai, he doesn't seem like the type to throw the compliment around.

In Seasons 1 and 2, we also saw it was Lorelai – a woman who has trouble saying "I love you" by her own admission – who pushed Christopher away out of some deep emotional problem.  She rationalizes that Christopher is "not ready for marriage" before she then goes on to sabotage two engagements herself.  She wouldn't let Chris sell insurance and live nearby and when he tried several "dreams" she asked about "how's the business doing"?  But then she tells Rory "she'll probably always love him."  She calls him at her bachlorette party.  Thanks to an amazing performance by Lauren Graham, we see how upset she is when she learns he's dating Sherry.  She flirts with him and teases that "he has to go back to Sherry" making it clear how she feels.  This after she has pushed him away over and over.  Lorelai is the mess.

But then the Palladinos turned on Christopher the character.  It's not clear why, other than that they needed to do it to make Luke the more plausible match for Lorelai.  Maybe they were upset that David Sutcliffe took movies and other series, wasn't available for Season 3, or something personal.  Amy herself told Ausiello ". I’m very Russian in the, “You cross me, and I take your picture off the wall once you defect, and I don’t know you anymore” [sense]"

But the character assassination began in full that season.  Amy told EW at the end of Season 2 that Christopher is "Robert Downey Jr. without the drug problem" – harsh.  Nothing in the series supports that characterization, other than the decision to make him that after the fact, writing him out of the show with a ridiculous soap opera storyline (he gets another girl pregnant).  It was bad TV writing designed to drag out a principal character's romantic woes rather than doing something intelligent with the characters.  How could Christopher come back from that? David Sutcliffe himself said before Season 7 that he was never sure where he stood with the show.

By Season 5, Christopher's being made into a boob.  As someone recently said on another board, Rory says every time Christopher came around Lorelai ended up crying. Um, not in the first four episodes we saw.  Where is Rory/the Palladino team getting this?  By Season 5, Lorelai is calling Christopher Dopey and stupid over and over, and yet she's supposed to be attracted to him still and goes to bed with him (And it's Christopher who is like Robert Downey Jr.? Come on, Amy.)  Before Rory takes Christopher's money in Season 6, she's telling Lorelai there's 99% chance nothing he can do that would be good for them.  After Rory has an affair with Dean while she's married, she's ragging on Christopher for "all of his faults."  It goes on and on like this, ridiculous bias for Lorelai, Rory and Luke and character assassination for Christopher.  Nuance went out the window with the rest of the writing staff lost at the end of Season 4.

So what's the reason?  My only sense is that it's about making Luke the Palladinos idea of a "real man" – and given Amy's behavior toward the WB and being unwilling to listen to her cast when they tried to give input, it seems like she gave Luke a lot of her own characteristics.  Explosive.  Stubborn. Vengeful – a "tough guy" who apparently has all these hidden talents conveniently whipped out to make a relationship seem plausible.

Look at the evolution of the Luke character.  In Seasons 1-3, he's a former jock, an outdoorsy type guy, uneducated (by his own admission, not able to tutor Jess), and hardly watches movies.  We even see flashes of this in Season 5 when he can't think of a book to tell Richard that he reads.

And yet, in Season 4, suddenly Luke takes on all these weird traits to make him look like such a perfect guy in disguise.  He quotes Tolstoy! He knows Pretty in Pink well enough to know where scenes take place in it!  He cooks amaretto cookies! He waltzes!  And let's not forget that we get to see this massive transformation - many of these hidden talents come shining through – because he reads a self-help book! I thought when I saw it, surely this is a joke that they're going to make something out of.  But no.

Without Sheila Lawrence, John Stephens, and Linda Loiselle Guzik there to edit and collaborate with them, the Palladinos showed that they quickly became shrill writers, echoes of their sitcom selves.  They recycled jokes (the BTK joke showed up at least 3 different times in Season 6).   Rory talks about Krav Maga and then acts like she doesn't know what it is in a later episode.  She covers a LaCrosse match for the paper and then in a later episode says she didn't even know Yale had a LaCrosse team.  She's supposed to be a foreign correspondent in training but takes no classes about other cultures or foreign languges; she studies poetry and philosophy.  The Palladinos repeated quotes from movies (having Zach quote Arthur – a movie before his time – and Luke doing it in a dream.  They didn't just bring Sherilyn Fynn back as a different character – they used bits and pieces from the Sasha storyline, complete with nerdy daughter.  And Season 6 was full of horrible episodes that they allegedly edited (at least they claimed that this was why they were exhausted and had to make the demands that got them canned). And even Season 5 had episodes that they wrote that made no sense whatsoever (ASP's "Pushkin" episode is built around the premise that Luke has a "dark day" stemming from his father's death and no one in this town that everyone knows about remembers or has figured out when his father, a longtime townie, died?)  It's a COLOSSAL MESS from the so-called meticulous Palladinos, who had an inflated opinion of their ability to know character.

Amy herself kept referring to Luke as Lorelai's future "partner" and apparently told people like Ausiello he was her soulmate – if she didn't mean it she shouldn't have said it –  but once she said it and stacked the deck so in favor of Luke and against Chris  plot points like putting Lorelai in Chris' bed seemed so contrived to make the storyline drag on to keep the show going.  It's all so odd and cliche that Lorelai rejected that Luke-Lorelai for the first four seasons, and even when she's all smitten for Luke she became a bullied and suppressed cipher when she had to put up with his rages, insults, and neglect.

But even Lauren Graham knew that despite bad writing, on paper and on screen, an adult woman would still find Christopher more capable of being tolerable in a relationship rather than someone who constantly blew up at her and made her depressed and submissive.

And we wonder why she was still with Luke? Team Palladino.  It's sad that Luke in Season 6 killed his relationship with Lorelai much the way the Palladinos did with their relationship with the WB in the same season.  But it's no coincidence.
