I know and i felt really bad for him when Lorelai called off the wedding i was like "what nooo!"

And although the main plot in the show is "luke and lorelai are made for each other" i think/thought [in the 1st&2nd series]  that Lorelai and Max are a better couple. 

EDIT: I think thay she was in love with Max just the timing wasn't right. If max comes along again [i know that this is unlikely] I think it could and should work.

Uh, I think it would be a shame and an outrage if anyone snarks anyone because they have a preference for another pairing besides Lorelai/Luke.  Or, if anyone snarks anyone for any pairing they happen to prefer.

I agree, they had more chemistry. I thought too that Lorelai loved him, but just the whole situation was so complicated.

Total retcon. A drill seargentaking a shovel and pushing the Lorelai/Luke destiny down the throats of everyone screaming, "Lorelai never loved anyone but him!!!!!  Not Max!  He was a place holder until a real man came along!  You got that punks!  What?  You like Max?  What you thought he and Lorelai made a good couple?  You thought maybe Lorelai just wasn't ready for marriage?  That maybe she just didn't love him enough for that kind of committment?  No!  No!  You heard it straight from the horse's mouth!  She only loved Luke.  LUKE!  Say it with me.  You vill learn!  You vill be assimilated!"  Wish I had a smiley with a whip cracking.  That's about as subtle as that whole thing was.

It was against the writers for putting that line about how Luke was the only man she ever loved.  Totally unnecessary, and it seemed like they wanted to force everyone to jump on the Lorelai/Luke bandwagon.

Yeah I remember thinking on the season finale...What? Of course she loved Max. She may not anymore, but their was a time when she did. The writers did try to scam people into jumping on the JJ bandwagon and although I'm on it, Max was a great guy and that whole scene was just annoying and not true.   Undecided
