Shame on our dirty little hearts

I'm watching Season 7 at the moment and there's some redeeming qualities to Christopher.

He's very attentive to Lorelai's feelings.  He would be the romantic and let her be involved in practically everything.

Something Luke isn't and I think it's because Luke tends to be aloof and at times, distant.  Yet, it's often due to the fact that he feels like he has to fix something and then make sure it's fixable so he can move on to something else.  Yes, what he did to Lorelai in postponing the wedding and kind of neglecting her was pretty bad.  He should've introduced April first and not worry about what Anna would think.

Yet, as I'm about watch the next four episodes that involve the implosion of the Lorelai-Christopher marriage and Lorelai's realization that she still loves Luke.

I admit, Season 7 is a very disjointed, messy season.

I don't know what happened between the Palladinos and WB, or rather the CW.

I think the show peaked at the end of the 5th season and then, something went wrong.  I think there was a pressure to keep it going and make it interesting.  They took some risks.  Some were good and some that would pretty much hurt the show.  I didn't mind the stuff involving Luke and April but I agree to some extent that it hurt the show.

I think a lot of the backstage politics and turmoil that went in the last 2 seasons I think is probably why there is reason for the cast members hesitation to continue for another season.  I think maybe they're still hesistant to do the Gilmore Girls film.  I don't know.  I'd rather not know about the back stage politics.

After all, the seventh season is a mess.  I don't think the majority of the writers really know what the show was.  It didn't have that engaging, quirky sense of humor or drama.  At times, the humor felt forced and other times, the drama was almost soap operatic.

Since this is a subject of Lorelai's boyfriends.  I think one of the good things about the season is that audiences get to know about Christopher in what he could bring for Lorelai.  As romantic and as attentive he is towards Lorelai.  He is also very flawed.  It's clear that he still wants Lorelai more than ever and having her rush through marriage.  I think it's him wanting to fulfill some kind of wish that he had ever since he and Lorelai were kids.  Now that I'm about to embark into their disintegration.  It's clear that when it comes to the idea of family.  He tends to put Lorelai first over Rory.  He got Lorelai to jump into the marriage without Rory's involvement and of course, Rory is mad.  Then Christopher is in Stars Hollow and the town's reaction towards him being married to Lorelai is mixed.  They don't hate the guy but they don't like him either.  They want to like him but they have a much bigger loyalty to Luke, who was born in Stars Hollow.  Christopher's intentions are noble but he's an outsider.  In Merry Fisticuffs, it is becoming evident that Christopher is not enjoying the fact that he is being compared to someone who he feels, is beneath him in many ways.  Yet having to deal with Luke's presence and his history with Lorelai got him very angry.  Of course, I think that's why Christopher decided to pick a fight with a guy, who is practically about to hit rock bottom as Luke is already coming to the realization that he screwed things up with Lorelai and is on the verge of losing his own daughter.

I think it was always intentional for audiences to root for Luke over Christopher.  Luke is the underdog.  He's the guy audiences root for because he's the blue-collar diner owner who serves coffee to everyone and for 8 years, pined for Lorelai.  See her be with all of these guys.  Then he finally gets to be with Lorelai where things were good for a while until Rory dropped out of Yale and an emotional Lorelai, amazed by how much he cared about Rory, proposed to him.  Luke said yes and was willing to wait for Lorelai when she and Rory settled their differences.  He waited but the timing in the discovery of his own daughter and such proved to be very bad.  When Lorelai found out about April.  She should've had the same courtesy to wait but she should've spoken out more.  It's her impatience and his neglect that destroyed their relationship at the end of the 6th season.

For Luke, not being with Lorelai meant he could devote his full attention to his own daughter where in contrast to Christopher, who never really got to know Rory and carries that regret.  Luke made the effort to bond and get to know his daughter where they definitely had something good together.  I think when he was forced into realizing that he needed Lorelai for help but with caution.   Lorelai, eventually decided to help because of the relationship he had with Rory but it would destory her marriage in the process.

I think for Lorelai and Christopher, there is no way the two can get back together.  Her feelings for Luke plus her devotion to Stars Hollow and the Dragonfly was too much for her to sacrifice.  Christopher ultimately realized that he screwed up and he did a lot of wrong to get Lorelai back by sleeping with her when she was engaged.  In the end, they chose to become friends while with Luke, she realized she needed him.

Luke and Lorelai can't really be apart.  In Luke, Lorelai can find someone who can provide for her, cook for her, and even share business advice with.  For Luke, Lorelai can allow him to open up more emotionally and even do things that he wouldn't normally do.  I think the 2nd half of the Season 7 (which I read through transcripts) is about the two longing to be with each other again but realize they can't go back to the way things were because they both hurt each other so drastically.  Plus, when they argue or have some kind of heated discussion.  They look and sound like a married couple.  I think they also get on each other's nerves much better than everyone else.

I know I'm a Java Junkie but don't we all wish for the caffine addict and her coffee supplier to be together for the rest of their lives.  Even as they get old.  I think I'm done for now.

I've a soft spot for Jason, he seemed more of Lorelai's equal than some of the others.  Plus their breakup was because he was prepared to stand up to the older Gilmore crap by suing Richard for effectively ruining his business reputation.  It wasn't a long drawn out breakup even with him turning up at the inn the night that Luke made his move and then when Lorelai told him to go, he did.

It was the only relationship that she had that didn't seem to end because she sabotaged it in some way, like calling Christopher when she was on her bachlorette party or sleeping with him when Luke didn't give her the answer she wanted straight away.  Okay I know those relationships had problems anyway, it was just nice to see Lorelai have a relationship that ended with there being no whiff of another man being involved.  I'm not sure what happened to Alex, he seemed a nice bloke and then poof he was gone and i didn't get what happened.

As for Christopher and Luke, I get the feeling that in the end Lorelai would only be truely happy if she could have both of them.

I don't know...of all the guys she's been with, for me, Luke is by far the best. He's not only letting her be exactly what she is, but he adores that she's just like that. And one more thing that makes him different than Christopher - he'd never do anything that would hurt her. (I'm not counting that "Hey, afterall you proposed to me" thing in the 7th season, he was mad.)

Chris...you just can't count on that guy, you never know what he's gonna do, and he almost always smells like trouble. I never really got over that thing that happenned at Emily and Richard's vow renewal.

And Jason! Maaan, I hated that guy. It looked like he wanted to keep up with Lorelai and be all funny and witty so bad that I just couldn's stand it.

So, yeah, Luke all the way. Smiley

Jess: Are you sure you want me to go? Cause maybe this whole thing can be solved between me and Dean if we just sat down, had a little heart-to-heart, he could tell me his issues, I’ll tell him mine…
Rory: Jess!
Jess: I promise I’ll speak slowly.
