Question: How much of a real man do you think Luke is?
He's a god in a flannel shirt.
He's a good, strong man.
He could be more manly.
He badly needs assertiveness lessons.
He's a completely spineless wimp.

@ natasha
Hi parents died, but he has a sister and he told her about the girl, which I thought was good. But I hope he'll tell it Lorelai soon. Because she told him also about Chris.

Okay lets start analysing again on this thread. These are my thought on Luke in this weeks episode. He started of hiding April from Lorelai and Rory I guess cause he didn’t want something to come between them. Then he told Liz, I think he was trying to convince himself that he was fine with the situation. They don’t want him, he doesn’t want them, all is fine in SH…Lorelai doesn’t even need to know. Kinda funny, another member in denialvile like a lot of JJ’s are right now because of him.  Wink Grin

But then when he was talking about Chris to Lorelai I got the feeling it wasn’t about Chris anymore. He said: ‘he’s doing what a dad is suppose to do, he’s taking care of his kid…good…good’. So that’s his definition of a father. That explains a lot . Lets stick to April first. So it’s thanksgiving and he is calling his kid. Which to me screams that he isn’t gonna just forget about it. He wants them to want him…he wants to be a good father by his definition of what a good father is. His dad wasn’t there to take care of him, so I think he might be ticked of cause they are forcing him to be the dad he had as a kid…the dad Rory had. He went from worried to mad when he made that phone call. I think it’s because of the second part of the message: ‘or we’re just to distracted to answer right now’. It makes it sound like they just didn’t wanna talk to him or something. That would make anybody mad, especially if you are trying to speak to your kid on thanksgiving. So I think Lorelai nailed it when she said: ‘she kicked you out’.

I actually met someone who’s father died when he was little and he always said that when he had kids he wouldn’t want to be that kind of dad. So I guess Luke might have wanted to be there for his kid like he ‘never’ had a dad be there for him. But they are forcing him into a role he doesn’t wanna play. This screams ‘Danes family issues this season’ to me. Hold on to something sturdy ladies cause he’s gonna blow. That would explain why he’s ‘always’ (mostly in the first seasons) crabby....rants. If you feel that a good dad is there for his kids, he might have some build up anger about his parents dying on him when he was little. That would explain mad Luke when he had his dark day. It’s not just sadness with him, he’s also pissed off on some level and doesn’t wanna acknowledge that, cause well the man is death and he loved him. But anger like that won’t go away…it will build up…especially when you throw on some oil (in the shape of April). Sooner or later he’s gonna blow. That’s why I think those people who were spec-ing about Luke breaking down this season, might get their wish.

Indeed.  Many JJ's are in denial (oooh, ooh, me!!) and Luke obviously is.

Exactly.  Anyone who is as obsessed with the show as we are knows that Luke cannot forget the fact that he has a KID.  Family is really really important to him.  We don't know much about Luke, but it is obvious that he is a really loyal person.  And part of that loyalty is not giving up on family.  Look at the way he's stood up for Liz - taking in Jess, going to Maine, hiring TJ.  Knowing all that, there is no way that Luke can forget his daughter, no matter how much he wants to.  The fact that she doesn't seem to want anything in return confuses him.  But I think he feels so guilty about not being there for April that pretty soon, his "two lives" will collide.

And I agree.  As usual.  Five whole seasons and still we know almost nothing about Luke's past.  I think this season is going to be a lot more focused on Luke because he is about to become a part of Lorelai's family officially.  He will be a Gilmore lol.  Because of that, I think Lorelai (and the loyal viewers  Wink) are finally going to know everything about him, April included.  The break-down/blow-up is definitely going to happen, in my opinion.  Luke is pissed, and he's sad, and now he's in complete shock over April...and that is not a healthy combination.

I think so, too, and I'm really looking forward to it. He has always been firm as rock, always been there for Lorelai, now it's time for her to comfort him, to kind of give back what he has always been giving her. I don't think she will be mad when she finds out about April (well, depends on the way she finds out...), but I do think this might be her opportunity to prove how much she loves him.

Yes! I do believe Lorelai needs to be the strong one for Lukenow. He's earned it. I think they'll be a fight, but they'll work through it and stick together.

What was mean exactly, cause it wasn't meant to be mean. The episode made me sad about Luke and pissed at the writers, I wasn't mean towards Luke.

I smirked, so it was supposed to be taken lightly. But, the mean, jerky picture of Luke. I'm trying to block it.

And, Luke's father wasn't there during his childhood? Wha? Where does that come from, 'cause WIlliam Danes died when Rory was about 5.

Good just checking about the 'mean' stuff. No no Lorelai never met Luke's parents....he started the diner after his dad died and he already had his diner for a couple of years when Lorelai came so his dad died when he was about begin 20s. His mom died earlier, cause Liz grew up without a mother (I'm guessing Liz was about 15 when her mom died cause she had Jess at 16 and her mom was died already and dad was dying...so Luke might have been in his begin 20s cause I don't know how big an age difference they have). So that's kinda what made Luke the way he is. I also think that's why he runs when he's sad. He had to be the strong one, cause first his mom died and when his dad got sick he helped his dad and I guess also with taking care of Liz. He's been the 'dad' for years...he needed to be the strong one. So I guess he never got the time...or never let himself be hurt/mad when he was little cause he needed to be the strong one. I think that's why he runs when he feels he can't be strong. He doesn't wanna be weak, cause he never had someone to be weak with. Someone to take care of him for a change. And I think if Luke has his little break down he will probably start of being really pissed. Cause that's the emotion he lets himself feel. Look at the last time he was sad...he got pissed of and ran. I think if someone wouldn't let him leave when he wants to run he will get mad, but that will only be the top of the iceberg. He might not even know what's really buggin' him till someone pushes him. I think it will be Lorelai, cause she tends to cling. Look at their history.
- Fight S2:Luke went 'fishing' and Lorelai kept on going to him when he was back only to find mad Luke.
- Luke's dark day: Lorelai bought the boat, Luke got really mad and ran in the end, Lorelai let him go but told him he didn't have to.
- Fight at the wedding: Chris hurt his feelings. Luke ran. Lorelai had a reaction like she didn't feel like he needed to run AND RAN AFTER HIM.

Next time Luke runs I don't think she will let him go so easily. And I think it's exactly what he needs, cause his father/sister obviously didn't care enough to be there for him in the past. The town knew of his dark day, but never took the time to stop him or figure out what was up with him. Or even more importantly (and a thing that I really wanna know!) where the hell he runs to! And now that they are living together…he won’t have time to be alone anymore (like Lorelai said 2 episodes ago). So it’s just a matter of time. Cause if the April thing doesn’t do the trick his next dark day will. He will have to run into her even if he plans to leave and there is no way she will let him hide like a little boy again without trying to stop him. So I have a feeling this will be a great season.

No, Liz had Jess when she was eighteen. Didn't she?

Gah! You make me question everything I've taken as fact.

Edit: In season four, Liz attended her 20th high school reunion, bringing reason to the thought that she was 38. Lorelai was 35. Jess and Rory were 19. Therefore, Liz had Jess at 19.

Booya! I trumped you.

This is a transcript from 'Nick & Nora/ Sid & Nancy:
LUKE: Look, his problem is obvious, it's his mother. You never could count on Liz for anything. Our mom died when we were kids, right? It was just my dad, me and Liz. And my dad worked all the time and I worked in the store with my dad, and Liz was off doing God knows what.
LORELAI: Well, I bet losing her mom so early was kind of hard on her.
LUKE: It was hard on all of us, but we did our part. And then the minute she graduates high school, she is outta here. Didn't matter that my dad was sick, didn't matter that the store was failing, she just took off. Married the hot dog king, had a kid, he left, now here we are. [Luke starts pumping up an air mattress]

How old are you in the states when you graduate high school? Cause that's when his dad was losing the fight against his illness (God knows what the man was suffering from) and his mom was already died. It's kinda what I based my little analysis on.

He also said in that same scene:
LUKE: There's nothing to think about. He's family. You take care of family, period.

Ohh look at these new caps:
Luke worried:

Luke hurt/mad when he hears that second part of the phone message.
