Hey, from your description with your father, maybe you would have been another nice kid in the Chilton mix. And hopefully would have kicked some butt!
No, actually , i never went to a private school, NOT that rich. But i was his little girl . My sister is 10 years older than me so basically i had him to myself ( as in money) beside i don't ask for much, not my thing!

I went to private school for the first two grades. It was very diffrent. We where living in india at the time(I am not indian though I learned hindi/urdu). When i came to the united states and attended public school. It wasn't anywhere close to it. I didn't learn anything new in math etc till I reached the sixth grade. school became a boring mundane place and it stayed that way for years to come. I wish i had stayed or gone to another private school. The public school system here can suck very very badly.

Sidney - yeah, i wasn't assuming you grew up rich, just comparing you how you seem out there in cyberspace,
with the wonderful Chilton brats.
Ali & Sidney - I hate to agree with Ali's statement about public schools in the U.S., and i'm sure there are exceptions, but i do agree as a general statement. I grew up in New York City, attended big public schools where you get lost in the crowd. I did have some good teachers & that's what it all comes down to i think. But too many teachers were hacks, picking up their paychecks. Even if i was interested in the subject, if i had a bad teacher it spoiled my desire to learn. Chilton certainly comes across as a school with very high academic standards, with high quality teachers. We saw very little of the townie S.H. school but it did not seem to measure up beyond the ordinary. That says something right there.

Yeah, when i was in highschool all my teachers were really bad. I couldn't respect them and when i don't respect someone i can't take the lessons seriously. I used to skip classes many times. And many of the teachers didn't even know that i was the top student in the class because i didn't raise my hand but focused more on my papers. They didn't care about talented students.

I don't know, i lost track of what i was trying to say! Whatever, yadda yadda, blah blah blah...
That's too bad you didn't have any good teachers. At least i can "boast" to having a pitiful few. But i know you have a current college professor who you admire, you brought him up about 5,000 posts ago, so that is something, aye?

not that this has to do with the priveliged or w/e but im puttin in my little bit about the school system:
from what i have heard american schools are a damn sight better than schools in britain, for a start there is not the option of leaving at 16 (im sure there are people who drop out, but to my knowledge in the US it is generally thougt of u stay on until 18 yes?) my mum is training to be a teacher, went back to university and the differences even between public schools in the USA and state schools here? (public schools=private in england btw lol) it is incredible, im sure there are those bad ones but everything from the class sizes to the participation and the 'graduation' rate.
i just finished my school education, at 11 i tool the 11+ (a selection process which determines as to whethere you go to a comprehensive school or a grammar school, with grammar schools supposedly being better as they take those who pass the 11+ which is the equivalent of the supposed top 10% most intelligent in the country) <--------- did that make sense?! anyhoo, i passed and got into the grammar school, i think it is too early to do reidiculous testing like that but yea, it seperates everybody but moving on:
i went to this grammar school, and as it is for the 'intelligent' sector (it was also all girls so yea, that didnt help!!!) it was supposed to have a better standard of teaching, which sure it does to the average comprehensive school but my god it is awful. im talking, seriously bad, the teachers didnt motivate you, could NOT control a class or anything, the class sizes are getting bigger, with more and more people dropping out at 16. this is just my school, however i have been to comprehensive schools and they are much worse, im sure there are exceptions but in general the school system here is awful, the seperation process, the way they test GCSE's and 16, A/S levels at 17, and A2 levels at 18, once you have done GCSE's then you are no longer even considered a school student really, sure u can stay AT a school' but it is called 6th form, or u can go to a sixth from college...anyway off track from the off track point lol there is not 1 single teacher in my 7 years of secondary school that i can say inspired me or anything, it is all just *insert swear word here* unless u get into the top notch 'private' schools like eton, or top notch colleges like oxford or cambrsige, it is unlikely that you are going to get a half decent conversation; ruth kelly our minister for education has in fact compared us to US schools and well, i wish i lived in the USA when i was at school...(a few days ago lmao)
but er, yea way of topic not even sure that makes sense, but that is my rant...lol and er...yes
L xxx
and i think this is the longest post i have ever made...once i get started lol...

My experience with the educational system hurt me more then it helped. The concepts where too easy, so i would pick them up and get bored and not do the homework. If i had a chance to relive my life with what i Know now. I'd focus on perfecting my writing and art., taking piano and guitar classes and not worrying about the rest.

- Well, after reading of England's school system, i
almost
feel better about ours in the U.S.!
Sidney
- Sounds like you had a crush or more on one of your teachers! Woo-hoo! You go, grrrrl!!
Anyway, i guess that's what you meant by a teacher being
"TOO good"
. Either that, or my mind is in the gutter.
Ali-Sama
- I understand what you're saying. I suppose in the end, it is up to each individual to overcome obstacles and make the most of his/her life.
I don't think we're being entirely off topic, because this does relate to the Chilton versus S.H. experience. Were the Chilton brats better off for going to their school? Debatable.

Actually the one i said that's " Too Good " is a
SHE
not a He ! Beside she's not even cute
I feel like puking right now!!
Anyway when i said was too good, i meant she could have given lessons in a university. She used to teach me philosophy. She was grumpy but when she talks about her subject i swear her eyes glow! She talked as if we weren't in the class!! Like she was flowing in another world or in heaven! It was her passion, you know?!!

Funny, i had an English teacher in high school who was similar! I'm glad you had at least that one good teacher!
Looks like my mind is in the gutter.
But i don't feel like puking, typical guy that i am!!

Sometimes the obstacles in life become so many that one gives up hope.
The problem with the chilton children was not their education. A lot of the lives we saw where very disturbing. At least paris had her support structure through the family house keeper. She had a family. that is something which probably made her stronger though she still felt a gap in her life. As her real family where never there for her.

But for some people, "privileged" or otherwise, a housekeeper would not be enough. Paris, for all her little vulnerabilities under the surface, was a rock, and a fiercely driven, extremely intelligent rock at that. Even in a school with many exceptional students (despite whatever other character flaws), she stood out. Someone like that will stand out at Harvard Medical and beyond, i feel safe in saying. I think everyone needs at least some kind of support structure, as you say, but i think it ultimately comes down to the strength of the individual in the end.

we arn't super heroes. We are mortals who try our best. I am as stubborn as it gets and I have gotten in more trouble for being stubborn. I am no superman, or batman. I wish I was however. I could help more poeple. The one tool which helps people live is the distinction between reality and fantasy. Once you blur the edges you end up being dissapointed or failing.
