I thought it was sweet that Brian made the song. He realized how Lane felt. Duh, if you make songs about everyother girl but not your girlfriend, wouldn't you think that maybe she might feel something there. And she even told him! Crazyness.

Luke should tell her!! But maybe he's afraid to change things...
Maybe he's scared it'll scare Lorelai off...
Then again, its not like he could hide it from Lorelai all his life..
WHAT is he doing?!?!?!?!

Boy, what is it with people (couples) not communicating in this episode!?!
I mean Lane and Zach are young and well - Zach is Zach.
Lane could have tried to tell him that it made her sad to have all these songs about his ex-girlfriends, though.
And how rude was what he said to her about her name? And he doesn´t even mean anything mean by it - he´s just Zach. Slow.
I think that he really
does
love her! And I felt sorry for him as he sat there outside, he´s not to dumb to realize what he´s done.
And Luke and Lorelai - Whoa!
I don´t even want to get into the "He should tell her"-discussion, of course he should!
But what´s with her pulling him away from the Thanksgiving-dinner to tell him about Chris? That was so
in passing
. Wouldn´t any person with a sane mind take the time to discuss something like this in private?
Because I think that if Lorelai would have tried to take some time to talk to him, he might have made up his mind to talk to her. Taking time to talk is one of the most important things in a relationship for gods sake!
Too many exclamation-marks, I apologize for that but I´m aggrivated!
(I just saw the epi so it´s still fresh.)

Thats a great point you brought up sternen-nest / Katrin... I think maybe that was the whole moral of the episode... That couples need to communicate ...to tell each other things..

Sorry if this repeats other people thoughts, want to share my thoughts before I read everyone else's just to express differently. I'm really annoyed by this episode, and it mostly has to do w/ Rory.
For me, the show started going downhill long before the separation, around the time of Pulp Friction. That's the point at which I felt Rory was starting to exclude her mother from her life and treat her badly, and Lorelai stopped calling Rory on it when she behaved badly.
Unfortunately, the first show after the reunion for me showed that things were going to be more of the same. We saw with the band invite from Lane that Rory was still shutting Lorelai out of her relationship with Logan. We saw with acceptance of the money that Lorelai was still not going to call Rory on her bad behavior, namely the way she left her grandparents' house. And then, the last straw for me, Christopher paying for Yale. I know you may think I’m mean, but I was sitting there thinking, “That spoiled brat is going to get yet another thing in life handed to her for free?” I don’t know, I definitely take many aspects of this show personally, but as someone who has had to struggle to work and attend school at the same time, it just seems that Rory has gotten everything handed to her in life, and she doesn’t really appreciate what she has.
Other things that irked me: Lorelai’s hat box of notes. It seems that the mother missed the daughter a lot more than Rory missed her. I know they’re supposed to be best friends, but geez, she’s been living alone for 3 years now, she should not still be so dependent on her friendship. If Rory ever does become Christiane Amanpour, she’s really going to have problems!!
Other stuff in the episode:
-Glad Lane and Zach broke up, I don’t think he’s good enough for her. However, Lane is a pretty dense not to have figured out what Zach’s attitude was about.
-Mildly miffed that about Luke not telling Lor, but honestly, they’ve been a quite boring couple, so am curious about how their storyline will shape up.
Okay, those are my thoughts on the episode. sorry if its long, I'm new and happy to have a group who likes this show as much as me!!

Welcome to the site! I loved reading your thoughts on this episode!
Some of the stuff you said were also points others brought up, but its still nice to know a whole summary on how you felt for the episode
I personally loved how cute Rory looked in the Pulp Fiction get up! I loved that episode cause Logan got jealous
I like that she's stop being the goody-good girl and is matureing and developing, with her own path, outside of what Lorelai has set, or what is expected of her.
On the other hand, I agree, she has been getting alot of things handed out to her for free.. I guess it was good to see her picking up rubbish and paying for her crimes.
I thought it was good that Christopher is finally doing something fatherly... I mean he hasn't really been there all her life... But, yeah, money... I'm not so sure about that...

But Christopher offered both of them the moon. It showed great strength and maturity for Rory to only accept tuition for Yale. Rory had to work hard to get there. Getting into Yale wasnt handed to her. Lorelai was willing to pay for Yale and forgo her dream of the inn, but Rory made a deal with her grandparents at first. Now she has an opportunity to go with her dad's money instead (the way it should have been in the first place)

What just because Rory did not take more from Christopher, she's mature? I think anyone who is not super greedy would have hesitated at taking a lot of stuff from Christopher at that point, because there are obviously going to lots of strings attached.
And while yes Rory worked hard to get to Yale, so what? Ask any senior in high school striving to attend an Ivy League school. Anyone who hopes to get into a high caliber scool like that is working their butts off and has been for 4 years of high school (unless they are a rich family who's clout will automatically open doors for them cough cough..Bush..cough)
Christopher paying for school is the way it should have been? Where does it say that? Ideally, yes, Christopher should have been in Rory's life and involved somehow in arranging the payment. However, when you apply for financial aid, they base your aid on the contributing household members, which in Rory's case, was her mother only. Prior to the complications of Richard's gift to Lorelai, the way Rory would have paid for Yale was to take out student loans and use things like work study to pay for the large part of the tuition that her mother wasn't expected to pay for. She woould be graduating in tons of debt and be paying back student loans for years to come. That is the reality of college for most kids who come from a middle class background.
The reason I think Rory is spoiled is because rather than recognizing this reality and being relieved at not having to work a job hard during and after college to pay for tuition, she has the option of two different family members paying for her fees. Therefore, she takes all that her grandparents have done for her education up until that point for granted because "they were too controlling." Ha! She's the one who put herself in the living arrangement where she could be controlled to begin with. That is why I think Rory is spoiled.
You can feel free to disagree with me. I am just expressing my opinion as someone who has already gone to college, and I guess that taints my point of view on the subject.

But obviously she had what it took. While her grandparents did know someone in admissions,The rest was all Rory's doing. If they only have x amount of spaces to fill, they are going to fill them with applicants that are best suited for that college atmosphere and that they think will succeed. They cannot accept everyone because they do not have enough spaces. That isnt being spoiled, just because she got in. She worked towards a goal, as hard as anyone else and succeeded in getting in.

Yes, as her
dad
, he should have been paying for college and any other expenses she might have had growing up. He didnt have to contribute all-but should have been giving something to Lorelai in support of the daughter he fathered. That's called meeting your reponsibilities. We are not given any indication that he had done any of that. (in fact the opposite is indicated again and again about how irresponsible he had been through the years) Lorelai took responsibility for all expenses until this point in her life. Her mother also was going to forgo her dream of the inn in order to send Rory to Yale had Rory not made the agreement with her grandparents for a LOAN. (not a gift, it was a loan from them to be paid back at the terms discussed in the episode where she graduates from Chilton)This loan was not Lorelai's idea, but Rory's alone. Lorelai even tried to talk Rory out of doing it this way and that she would find a way to pay for Yale herself (with the money her dad gave her) Originally it seems that Rory was going to take out Financial Aid Loans until the extra money Richard gave Lorelai overquallified their income for her to do so. I dont see everything handed to her-she just had assorted means in order to accomplish her goal of college Good for her.

As I stated above, it wasnt a free gift of money-it was a loan that Rory was to pay back, not a gift. Rory is shown having a job in her first year of college (swipping cards at the library) and later is seen having a temporary job at a bookstore. To me this indicates that she had to take some responsibility for some of her expenses (even if just living expenses above and beyond tuition, room and board.) Her grandfather wasnt going to have her pay it off right away as he wanted her to have the chance to work some and establish herself. It was a generous offer and great opportunity for her to be able to go to school this way. Just because everyone isnt give the same opportunities does not mean we should begrudge those that do. That is life, some have, some do not. Im not going to waste any time bothered by the fact that some get to go to college without having to work another job-and some do not. ::shrugs::
When she had a falling out with her grandmother-and her father offered the world-she ONLY accepted what she might need for Yale. He should have been contributing anyway all along. That he finally got his act together enough to help her (coincidently...as is often the case on TV...it happened when she had said falling out)

I dont think she took it for granted. I think she knew what a wonderful opportunity they gave her by agreeing to let her borrow the money and to pay it back at some really good terms in the future. All that has changed now is that her father is paying for it rather than the elder Gilmores. She'll still need to pay them back-for the two years they paid for at some point later...but it sort of is the kind of details that dont have to cross the screen again in dialog.

I've gone to college. (I am 39 yrs old) I also had to work during that time to pay for my books, my gas and any other expenses I had beyond tuition. I lived at home. When my kids go in a few years here, They will probably be doing much the same. (mainly because I dont want them to start life with a ton of debt.) When I watch a show like this, I guess I dont care if the characters or the story plot seems a bit unrealistic...or to see characters have everything given to them...because as I said, some folks are fortunate to not have to work and have it given to them, and some have to work a bit harder. It doesnt make one person better than the other or vice versa, or spoiled or not, it is just life...or in this case, it is
just
a TV Show.

I do feel that a parent should be responsible to help out their child when they are in need and rory was in need of money for yale. She made a bad decision using E & R's money. It is very difficult to pay for Yale on an undergrads salary!!!!!

Having just watched this episode for the first time last night I'm still scratching my head about why Luke didn't tell Lorelai about April, he had the chance and he didn't. I know he's trying to come to terms with having a daughter but it's Lorelai! Lorelai of all people! Honestly I know they're not together at the end of the season but I understand why now, it's not because they don't work, it's because they both need to work on themselves. I know, it's cliched but so true, they both have to come to terms with who they are as individuals before they can become a real couple. Lorelai has serious serious baggage and now Luke does too. A daughter you've never known existed is automatic instant and heavy baggage, not to mention emotional turmoil and anxiety. I look forward to seeing how they develop separately from one another and whehter that progression will lead them to one another again.
