WB dumps costly 'Gilmore Girls' spinoff
June 19th, 2003

There will be no “Gilmore Guys” joining the “Gilmore Girls” next season. The WB cancelled its six-episode order for a spinoff because of mounting production costs. The untitled show, focused on Rory’s ex-boyfriend, was to star Milo Ventimiglia as bad-boy Jess and Rob Estes as his estranged father, who lived in Venice, Calif. “Gilmore Girls” creator Amy Sherman-Palladino wanted to film the six episodes on location in Venice. The WB decided it was too costly and canceled the project, which was intended as a midseason replacement. It’s possible, although undecided right now, that Ventimiglia now will return to the original show. At the end of the season “Gilmore Girls” lost another of Rory’s boyfriends, Jared Padelecki (Dean), to another failed WB pilot, a remake of “MacGyver.”
