Hey guys, I'm from NJ, so I'm no Midwesterner, but Carleton College (in Northfield) is essentially the first-choice college on my list (I'm a senior in high school).

I visited MN in September, but I was wondering on a few of your wise thoughts on a newcomer possibly being out in MN. Thoughts? I lit up when I saw "Minnesota," I've become a fan of your state. Smiley

Do you think my hair looks cool? 'Cause, you know, some days I wake up and I'm like, cool. Some days I'm like, could be cooler. Like today I got up and I was like, left side cool, right side not so cool.

Aww... high praise from a New Jersan( I was trying to reference you know like Minnesotan). What exactly was your question? Were you asking if newcomers are excepted in MN? If so, then they are. I know a lot of people(and I would too) that would welcome you with open arms. Where did you say you might move?

Ahhh! You're looking at Carleton huh?! GREAT GREAT school! I wasn't lucky enough to attend there, unfortunately...
however, I did work in Northfield for about a year and half and LOVE that town! I'm assuming that you visited Northfield when you came to MN recently. It's a great town, a college town but it has so much more! I know that they've been doing a lot of updates to the town so a lot has changed since I was there last, even in only a year's time.

I don't know people from other states adjust to smaller towns, but Northfield is a smaller town. I assume you know that already...just wanted to remind ya! It's a big difference when you're coming from a bigger city! But I love both - small towns definitely have their advantages as well!

I have to go for awhile but when I return, I'll write more!
As Katie said, we'll welcome you with open arms! Minnesota is a wonderful state to be a fan of!
Hope you choose to come our way~

BETH!!!!!! Long time no see and I'm so honored to have you posting in 'my thread'!  So cool, ladies I don't know if you 'know'  who you're talking too.  Beth, was one of the oldies and regularies on the OLD FORUM before hack and one of the founding members of the FSC thread....back in the day her and her 'groupies' were incredible.  Beth was also a mod for awhile, but I think due to some security thing...she decided not to be one, right?  Every so often I wonder about you, so I think it's so cool to see you posting here and just to see you posting in gern.

Carlton College, I don't know much about it...but it is practically in my backyard.  Northfield is only like 20 minutes south of where I live, so I think that's amazing.  It is a small town, but I know most students enjoy their time there.  Why are you interested in Carlton?  We love meeting people from other areas in the US (as well as the world)..but it's rare to hear of East Coasters coming here, so that's cool!

Wow so we should feel INCREDIBLY honored?! Beth, I know a few people who applied to Carlton. They are all great people, and I'm sure would be willing to take you under their wing.

Aw, hey, Mas! You're too sweet.  Blow Kiss I'm blushing. I'm so glad there is someone  here I "recognize" (though hello to all of you people, too, nice to meet you!), and that you're holding down the fort.

Yep, I visited Northfield, and loved it. That coffeeshop in the downtown is exactly how I pictured my college experience. (Yes, everything I do is somehow related to coffee.)

Why Carleton? Huh, that's funny, the Office of Admissions was curious, too! Ha. Uh, well, I had read in a college guidebook that it was similar to Amherst, Williams, and that gang of colleges, but less fussy, prissy and prim, and more awkward, funny and relaxed. I also don't want to stay on the East Coast forever, necessarily, there's a whole country (world, I suppose) out there! Or to the colleges that EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY CLASSMATES are applying to. When I visited Carleton (one of my best friends lives in St. Paul, so the visit wasn't just a college one), I felt so at home. The students were friendly, interesting, quirky (but not full-out, intimidatingly weird), fun and NICE. They seemed to get along really well too, and there was none of the pretensiousness I felt at other places.

I'm also looking at Kenyon (second to Carleton) so that's another Midwestern school (not QUITE as Midwest, but it's something Wink).

Aw, gee Thanks Sunshine!  That means a lot to me coming from you.

The students were friendly, interesting, quirky (but not full-out, intimidatingly weird), fun and NICE. They seemed to get along really well too, and there was none of the pretensiousness I felt at other places.
I'm sure that summed a lot of it up, you mean the students didn't have poles stuck up their rear's like some of the other east coast schools?  Wink  I admire you for applying somewhere a little outside your comfort zone and realizing that all of the world isn't out east.  I don't mean to sound biast in any way, but I went to school in the West and for so many things the EAST thinks that they are superior to other schools.  ONe example would be in the world of sports, east coast teams are always ranked higher because the competiton is 'harder' in their areas.  It may or not be true, but it would always get to me that our teams were ranked lower because our 'so called divisons were easier than our east coast conterparts'.  PLEASE don't take any offense to this!

I'm also looking at Kenyon (second to Carleton) so that's another Midwestern school (not QUITE as Midwest, but it's something Wink).
I'm not familiar with Kenyon, where is it?

Did anyone see snow this morning?! We had a 'dusting' and it stuck on the roads, driveways, sidewalks and already frozen lakes BUT not on the grass.  I find that weird, like it was spiting my last statement about WHERE the snow should land!  Oh well, and seeing the snow makes me realize I should really consolidate my christmas shopping and get my christmas lists out fo the family members that are requesting them. Does anyone else find it really difficult to make their christmas list? It's so hard for me to realize what I WANT to give to my family......so what is everyone putting on their lists? Please help me finish mine?

I love that coffee shop - Aucustic Cafe! It was the closet thing I had to my very own "Lukes" while I was in that wonderful town! There are some great people who work there and they always have the best chili and sandwiches ready to serve up! I miss that place so so much! I'm going to have to call my friend from down there and go down and spend time in the beautiful, fun, awesome town! It's really such a delight down there! You'll love it!

You must be smart - that's all I have to say about this! You're picking some great schools! All the very best to you as you decide what you're going to do! But, whatever you choose, just remember to go in with everything you've got! You only live once, so don't hold back, do everything with all you've got! College can be such a great experience and I wish you the very BEST!!

Ah, Sooks, you know that coffeeshop! It IS like Luke's, only a little... funkier, I'd say.

Mas, it's true! (That's what we always called you, I think. Hehe.) Kenyon is in a little town in Ohio.
Oh, and I take NO offense whatsoever to your East-comments... they're true! When people say they can "see me in the Midwest" my first response is "what do you mean by that?" They usually can't put their finger on it... but I always take it as a compliment.

Thanks for the well-wishes, guys. If you're any indication of the "Midwestern feel" I'm about ready to call up Northwestern Airlines and book my flight! Tongue

Yes, I think so Sunshine!  I wasn't too eager to give out my name then....I guess I'm a bit more open now.  I'm guessing they mean that you are much more down to earth and maybe you enjoy life a little bit more, not taking it at a neckbreaking pace of a 'new york minute'.  Maybe you're more like those 'farmer's daughters'' that the beach boys sang about!  Wink

We look forward to seeing ya!

Katie, I haven't seen FF5 yet, so cool! Though I still need to do Christmas shopping for my hubby!

Guess who stayed home sick today?  Me!  I probably could have forced myself, but I felt like if I rested today it would help my cold go away much faster!  I've coughed off and on last night, and coughing is always the death of me!  I hate them!  I'm doing a bit better, but I think it's good I stayed home because my voice wouldn't have held out at school and talking would have most likely lead to coughing....etc.!

The Blenders?  I'm guessing you're not talking about the kitchen gadget circa 1950, used to mix up milk shakes and such.    Lol!

Well, I'm so not in the know...especially with bands...so I'm sorry. I just wish I could make another half @$$ed comment back at you!  Wink

CRASH!  I heard upstairs, my hubby was throwing the frozen pizza in the oven and it slipped off the cardboard all over the floor!  DRATS!  What a waste!  I was so wanting the bland cheese one, so now we have to settle for an alternative. Sad

My Chrismtas List - Well, iTunes gift cards are a start, Disney Scene It, Happy Feet Full Soundtrack, 7th Heaven Season 3 DVDs. hmmmm.....so hard to think of more!
