Just wondering..why does it always say SPECIAL APPEARENCE BY EDWARD HERRMANN?? is it just because he's famous??

In a word, yes.  In a few more words, Edward Herrmann is probably the most accomplished (at the very least in quanity) actor on the show, with credits going back for years.  The first time I saw him was playing FDR in Annie, and I know he was working way before that.  His credit on the show is just acknowledgement of his status as an actor.

Actually, let me correct something.  I don't know if "famous" is the right word.  I don't think it's because he's that well known (probably he's better known because of Gilmore Girls than he was before -I could be wrong though.  His stints as FDR may be more famous than I'm giving him credit for), but because of his body of work.  Not so much fame, but more a long body of work.

While some actors always seem to be "acting" (Peter O'Toole comes to mind as the most outrageous HAM I can think of), Edward Herrmann becomes his character. He was wonderful as FDR, and here, as far as I'm concerned he IS Richard Gilmore.

I recall a scene from an old movie in which a young Tony Curtis was enduring the boasting of an old windbag actor. "If I played a bellhop," said the old blowhard, "the people would say 'there goes a great actor!'"

To which Tony Curtis' character replies, "Gee. If I played a bellhop, I'd hope the people would say 'there goes the bellhop.'"

When I see Edward Herrmann come on as Richard Gilmore, I think Hey - here comes Richard Gilmore.

I agree.  I may not like Richard, but I think Edward Herrmann does a fine job of playing him.

Edward is amazing as Richard even though we don't always like him.
I think its more of a respect thing to say a special appearence atleast that's what I think.

I have watched Ed Herrmann on many things, anytime I have the opportunity to see him in anything I take it. He is just so amazing. He has this dry comedic wit about him- it is great! He was in this movie called Big Business with Bette Midler and Lilly Tomlin, he sat down in his chair and fell backwards It was so funny. Just the way he rolls his eyes, makes a face(his facial expressions are great)  Anytime I find out that he has even a bit part in a movie or TV show I watch it, he has a small part in the Avaitor, it was cute.  I totally agree that he is RICHARD GILMORE. I have said it before he needs to DITCH THE BOW TIE, but other than that he is the man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Ok truth  is I have a crush on the guy, I KNOW, HOW CRAZY IS THAT?  He's got that fatherly figure thing going on.  I could be the guys daughter.  Now that I have shocked everyone, lets move onto Kelly Bishop

She just totally ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The woman is soooooo funny! She plays Emily to the hilt! No  one could do a better job.
That was so sweet that they want to buy Luke and Lorelai a house.
They are BIG WEINERS sometimes, but that is just how they are.
Ed and Kelly are the foundation of that show.

AGAIN I SAY, ED AND KELLY ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU GO RICHARD AND EMILY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have they ever said on the show what Emily's maiden name is?  On the wikipedia site, they have it as Emily Abbot, but I don't remember it ever being mentioned.

Does anyone know how old Edward's wife is? She is his second wife, and they have a daughter who is around 10 or 11 years old, I m assuming that she is somewhat younger than he is.

I bought season one and two of 'Kate and Allie' the other day.  In an episode where Kate's co-worker is pregnant, Kelly Bishop played one of the other co-workers! She was practically the same character as Emily: sarcastic and dry. She looked good.   x

i started this thread because we started the Richard one and everyone agreed there should be an emily one so any opinions on emily go ahead and share them. Personally my opinion on emily i like her but i think she takes too much out on lorelai and she acts like gran though gran was a lot tougher than emily is. i also think she is too harsh with her husband

I like Emily.  I think that she is a very strong character.  And think about it, she only wants what is best for Lorelai.  Put yourself in Emily's shoes, she does what is best for Lorelai and Rory, whether they see it or not.  She does an excellent job portraying her character.
