Hey, jessicagilmore - I'm with you . . . Luke all the way!  Nod

Another wonderful episode!!!  For right now, I would just like to share my favorite bits -- will discuss the bigger "commitment" issues of our Girls later.

* Playing 1, 2, 3, He's Yours!  By the way, Luke was definitely the third guy and he should have been the one Lorelai picks.  Nod
Luke: "Why am I watching?"
Lorelai:  "Because it's like a train wreck."

*  Lorelai seeing Luke coming out of The Cat Club.
Lorelai:  "The Cat Club?  You have a couple things to pick up at The Cat Club?"

*  Mrs. Kim while Dean and Lane are studying . . .
"I see all!" w/ fantastic facial expressions.

*  Lorelai waking cranky Rory up.
Lorelai:  "Am I more beautiful today than I was yesterday?"
Rory:  "Oh Boy."

*  Lorelai buying things for Luke.
Lorelai:  "I don't know what this fabric is, but I think I want to have its baby."   Cheesy

Lorelai:  "This suit . . . 175% off."  Hee - she keeps upping the percentage a bit after that too.

Lorleai:  "Just once be too sexy for your shirt and do a little dance on the catwalk."

*  At Chilton:
Paris:  "You didn't take one note.  You believe in the osmosis theory of learning?"
Rory:  "Why do you care?"
Paris:  "I don't, just making an observation."
Rory:  "Great.  We'll build a dome over you and jam a telescope in your head."  [love how Rory sounds like Paris here! ]

*  Luke trying on clothes: (Rachel walks in while Lorelai is helping him - AWKWARD!)
Luke:  "There was a sale at Bloomingdales and she . . ."
Lorelai:  "Six trillion percent off!"
Luke:  "How can you walk away from that, huh?"

*  Coming home after fighting w/ Rory in town:
Lorelai:  "Rory, I'm back for Round 2.  I got some silly string in case things get really ugly."

*  Emily after Rory shows up at the Gilmore's:
Emily:  "She had a fight w/ Lorelai - and she came here."  (something about the way she says it is so powerful w/ her expressions - like the cat that ate the cream!)

*  After finding out Rory is at Emily's:
Lorelai:  "That house is not safe.  It's like the Amityville Horrors without all the good times."

* Richard reading newspaper: This quote is soooo true and I think of it often when being faced with all the horrors on the news . . .
Rory:  "Hey Grandpa, what's new in the world today?'
Richard:  "As usual, it's going to hell in a handbasket."
Rory:  "It's nice to have something you can always count on."

i love the end whare she call everyone and telling them about her and max love is grand and it makes you so happy that you want to shout it from the roof tops
Yes, this is a very wonderful gesture - and shows that at this point she really wants to give Max a true blue try!

More later!!!

...

Michelle,
Those were wonderful bits! My favourite too. In fact, this entire episode is probably one of my most favourite Season 1 Episodes  (the other ones include "Christopher Returns").

I thought I would add one more line to the list you made (this is when Rory goes to her Grandparents')

EMILY: (to Rory) Everything's going to be fine. (to Richard) Richard, say something encouraging.

RICHARD: Uh Rory, I'm sorry you're upset, but I applaud your timing.  Grin

Ed Herrmann is at his best in this episode!

Michelle you really went to town! I love your list.

Mrs. Kim is killer in the scene with Dean. The way she suddenly appears and startles him, gives him her workover and tells him to empty his pockets. She asks him a question, he answers, then she tells him "You don't talk".  Cheesy

I wish i had found Emily half as funny but as Mrs. Kim. As she often does, she missed the big picture and was pre-occupied with getting over on Lorelai. The way she gloats over Rory running to her and Richard reminds me of the wicked witch from The Wizard of Oz or Mr. Burns from The Simpsons. I half-expected her to rub her hands together and sneer "excellent". After her initial curiosity and concern over Rory's sudden appearance, all she can focus on is that Rory ran to their   house. Is she concerned that the fight with Lorelai could be over something very serious? Is she concerned that Rory has essentially run away from home? Nope and nope.

As for Rory running to her grandparents that way, all i can say is phooey and no thanks for the preview of season 6.

I thought Lorelai and Luke were very cute in the "dress-up" scene, but i don't think it was appropriate that Lorelai was buying clothes for Luke, a guy who now has a girlfriend. Oh, and Lorelai has a sort-of boyfriend in Max. Sure, they are "just friends", yep, but they had good reason to feel awkward when Rachel innocently appeared and saw Lorelai dressing her guy. Also, not that i know much about fashion, but i think Luke looks better in his usual flannel and jeans, not the designer chic stuff Lorelai was forcing on him.

Lorelai again shows herself to be a great mom when she had the talk with Rory at the end. Lorelai has previously said she doesn't want Rory to grow up to be like her and i don't quite get that, except in this one area of dealing with men. She is so conscientious, showing concern that her own issues with guys might have worn off on Rory, and gives a great speech explaining that it's perfectly ok to accept love. Lorelai has great mom instincts.

I didn't see Emily as all that sinister in this. I mean maybe there was a shade of wanting to keep Rory and relieve her of the bad influence that was Lorelai, but I think she was reacting to something else as well. Her relationship with Rory is still kind of new and Lorelai-controlled, but here Rory had a fight at home and had to get away somewhere. Instead of going to a friend or hooking up with some stranger on the interstate, she goes to her grandparents, practically establishing them as an emo-emergency contact.

Emily was way insensitive to Lorelai's feelings, but she called right away when Rory got there, and she tried to help. She obeyed the bylaws of the mom club. I can forgive her for reveling in the fight a little, too: She's been wondering the whole time if Lorelai was so great a mom while she was so terrible, but all mothers and daughters fight sometimes, and this was her only sign from Rory that Lorelai's parenting soapbox was not so tall. For the first time, Rory came to her when she needed someone, and let Emily be her "Lorelai Gilmore." I imagine a part of her just wanted it to last a little longer.

Poor Rachel, when she walked in on Luke and Lorelai playing dress-me-Ken, it reminded me of the Anna bag for Luke's Philadelphia trip. Like Rachel had wanted to dress Luke, but was afraid it would set him off or push him away from her. Double burn, she must have realized that Lorelai had picked out her b-day present. If it were me, I'd have relived every single time I'd dumped him by mistake in that moment.

Luke and Rachel were cohabiting but Lorelai was bringing all the love and faith to the relationship. Dang, she's a good friend.

For the first time, Rory came to her when she needed someone, and let Emily be her "Lorelai Gilmore." I imagine a part of her just wanted it to last a little longer.

I reckon i over-stated Emily's behavior; she wasn't that bad. The Wicked Witch and Mr. Burns are more sinister than Emily Gilmore.  Wink But i think a more attuned grandmother would be troubled by the fact that Rory left home with the idea of spending the night at her grandparents and no intention of telling her mother where she is. This can't be compared to Lorelai's running away as a teenager, but it was a type of running away. Rory didn't leave a note for Lorelai, she simply skipped town. Sure, Emily dutifully notified Lorelai and stumbled into the common sense that it might be best that she not speak to Rory just then and she was savoring the moment. Maybe she's thinking it's beautiful kharma that Rory is now running away from Lorelai? Maybe not, but i think Emily's priorities are screwed-up. I might sympathize with her if she widened her tunnel vision in the ongoing Rory battle. And if Emily was being Rory's "Lorelai Gilmore" for the night, it was a limited version. Rory did not tell her anything except that they had a fight and she wanted to go to sleep. Slim pickins for Emily.

Also, i don't think Emily's relationship with Rory is Lorelai-controlled. Rory is free to spend time with Emily as she sees fit. Lorelai, despite her moments of jealousy and surprise about it, would not try to prevent it anymore than she tries to prevent Rory's more genuine relationship with Richard. Emily doesn't have a better relationship with Rory because she hasn't made much of an effort. Yep, they made a brief connection in "Emily in Wonderland" but that was an exception. One difference between Emily and Richard is that Richard is not battling against Lorelai for Rory's loyalty.

I agree with others that Richard was hilarious in this episode, especially the scene where Rory shows up. He displayed shades of Lorelai when he ranted about flinging himself off the roof in the middle of Pittie Salinger's speech. Pittie Salinger, who is a "dipsomaniac."   Cheesy And they were going to a benefit to save the berringiny pansy? As Emily put it, "As president of the horticultural society, I have to care."  Smiley

This one is great.  I feel sorry for Rory through her adolescence and confusion.  Lorelai was just trying to protect her and such.

It was good that Rory went to her grandparents to stay and I don't think Emily is controlling.  I think in some way, she just wants to have the feeling of someone else aside from Richard and the maid around.

That was awkward.  Seeing Luke, not in flannel and in a suit with Rachel seeing it all.

Lorelai did the right thing. She normally does everything with rory being the person to work around! But really it would suck to no end after ending such an intense relationship...

i just feel like dean had no right to break up with her she was caught of guard. Love is such a passionate thing it takes time to realize it not just one person to do it for you!

I'm torn, really like both Max and Luke for our girl.

Richard was a  H00T in this episode, loved the banter at breakfast with Rory.
