April does have a point. Her entire prescence is there to act as a catylist to explore the cracks in Luke and Lorelai's relationship. Just cuz she's not loved, doesn't mean shes' not there for a reason.

Yeah, I'm the one that said that April was pointless. I think adding her, and that whole storyline, was definitely "jumping the shark" (if you're familiar with the expression). I agree, this thread should be renamed, or perhaps I should move my comments to the April Unappreciation thread.

I really enjoyed reading the different kinds of intelligence that the characters displayed.  Now, I'm wondering where I'd class Logan.  And, I can think of two reasons why there might be a large concentration of characters with high verbal skills (and other forms of intelligence, but mostly verbal for this point).  First, we know characters through their actions, but even more, through their dialogue.  And, since GG's is a particularly chatty show, right down to its humor (very very rarely is comedy on the show physical.  It's all verbal) the characters have to be articulate to fit the type of show.

Second, aren't people naturally drawn to others who share similar ideas and traits?  All these people, with the exception of April, fit in Lorelai and Rory's circle.  I mean, they're not just random smart people.  Rory and Lane, best friends.  Someone as smart as Paris (and as insecure) would naturally have zoned in on Rory as a rival, which means she'd interact with Rory more.  Jess and Rory would have been drawn to each other because of their interests in reading.  Lorelai would spend time with people who could keep up with her talking.  I know these characters were written to interact and be smart anyway, but it makes sense that Lorelai and Rory would spend time with people like that.

Now, if this is just about April's existance, would anything have changed if April was still there, was still Luke's kid, Luke and Lorelai still made the same mistakes after finding out about her, only she was of mediocre intelligence?  Wouldn't the same problems exist even without the intelligence?

Hmmm, I think Logan (in addition to verbal and perhaps some others) has a high interpersonal intelligence.  I mean, he is very charming and can talk people into things they might not normally consider (You Jump, I Jump).

Wouldn't the same problems exist even without the intelligence?

 And about April, my mom is convinced that it is all a ploy to eventually get rid of Rory and replace her with April, like Luke and Lorelai's daughter, so that would make sense (although I really try not to think about it).

Interesting theory, but I don't think they'd ever get rid of Rory -- unless we're talking about a kid of spin off.  I honestly think April is a lot different than Rory -- she's more of sciency type.(is this where Dani's seeing the Paris conparisons.)  As much as Rory was into school I see April as more of a nerd than Rory ever was and she is by no means fashion conscious.    (maybe this should go to the April thread!)

I'm more talking about the younger generation of smarties.  we have Rory, Jess, and Pairis who are all excellent characters that I love, but then they just had to put it over the edge by adding April who doesnt bring much to the table. They should have just quit while they were ahead.

Are you saying that GG should have already ended?  When do you think they should of stopped, with current episodes - not your own ending? ANd then if you had the option how would you have ended it?   (BTW I LOVE your sig, but I think it exceeds the size limits - 500 by 200 pixels)

Michelle, didn't Vgosty do multiple intelligences too or maybe a rivaling theory?  Maybe I'm getting my scholars confused.  Nice addition to the convo -- pretty stick to you.  Aren't the multiple inteligences related to learning styles, because a lot of them sound familiar --- well at least the first few.

I agree, the turmoil between Luke and Lore would still exist, but maybe if she was stupid Lorelai woudldn't care for her so much.

And, last night, I changed my mind and decided April reminded me of a character on an older (1989) tv show, Life Goes On.  But, I'll edit my post on the April Appreciation thread after I finish this to add my comparisions and contrasts with Paris and Rory.

Richard -good business sense (ha!  I knew one day I'd be able to say something positive about Richard).  Emily -organizational skills, with keeping the household running (even with the maid problems) and keeping the social calender up, and pretty much having the job of being a corporate wife.

That's probably one of the main reasons why April is so smart.  Just an added knife to the gut.

I don't think that's the point miloismine (or I) was making. She was annoyed that April is smart, and that she was added to the show, but one thing has nothing to do with the other. I still wouldn't want her on the show, smart or not. And it isn't even because it caused the rift between Luke and Lorelai, it's the "jumping the shark" I mentioned earlier, which I think is beneath the show.
