Until i read posts on this thread it never occured to me that Lorelai was hijacking Sookie's tickets! But Sookie did get them especially for Lorelai and wasn't a big Bangles fan herself so maybe she really didn't care. Her attitude towards Rory is like a loving aunt and with her temperament she'd just go along with the flow. If Sookie really cared or thought she was being taken advantage of she would say something. She's a sweetheart but not to be pushed around over anything serious. Aside from all that it was a gracious move by Lorelai, who wanted to share the experience with Rory but thought it more important that her daughter bond with the Chilton Brats.

Lorelai has a thing for "girl groups" from the '80s -  the Bangles, B-52s, Bananarama - and it perfectly fits her personality. I wish we had seen the Bangles perform their song "If She Knew What She Wants", not only a great song but the title describes Lorelai's relationship with men very well.

I loved the party rescue, but it wasn't as good as Darlene and Daisy Chainsaw. Truly, ASP is a master of maternal lectures. Smiley

I get Lorelai wanting to fill in the gaps about Rachel. I mean, he did completely lose his temper with her over a shirt, who'd put with that crap and no explanation? Maybe that was what they were trying to get across with Paris's sympathy for Tristan: It's a lot easier to forgive even the jerkiest jerk if you know why he's a jerk.

You know, Lorelai and Rory always make fun of people's tastes in music and it turns out they love the Bangles, what's up with that? The Bangles are not great and i never take them seriously.  Cool I kind of wish if Lane made fun of them or something but she is a fan herself!!!

I like how Miss Patty picked up the jacket and just knew the former owner. Says a lot about the bizzare S.H. twon and the people in it. Everyone knows everyone, they even remember a jacket someone's wore- many years later. How freaky is that? I like how we hear about Luke's ex- girlfriend and get to know what everyone thinks of her then later in the show, she shows up and we get to compare their thoughts with the real one. I like how Miss Patty and Sookie were puzzled of Rachel's real job. Very exciting!
Lorelai was obviously jealous but the Queen of Denial kept on denial! I also liked how we get to see Luke very sensitive in this episode about the whole thing.

I think it's ironic how Lorelai gave the girls the tickets to draw them closer but she ended up doing the opposite!

b-52's weren't a girl group. they were 3 guys and 2 girls.

Heh, I like to sing along with my tunes, but the Bangles are a real challenge. Superior musical ability in the group, definitely. They'd be all-time faves if not for my irrational aversion to love songs. "Walk Like an Egyptian" is in my top ten, though.

Too bad Louise and Madeleine were embarrassed, but Rory definitely got the nod from Paris. I had to wonder if she'd gone out with M&L a lot, and having them ditch her for a couple of strangers wasn't a new thing. Anyway, watching a responsible adult crack down on them being stupid seemed really satisfying to her.

I also like the clear contrast between the way M&L, Rory, and Paris viewed Tristan. M&L were constantly on about how foxy he was, but they didn't understand him the way Paris did, so she hoped she would eventually outrank the bimbettes in his eyes. At the same time, Rory was on about how he was even more of a jerk than Paris was, also without really understanding him. I mean, all her friends knew they'd be a disaster as a couple, but at least she's finally hearing that it's because she's too good for him.

But with Luke, we saw that he did have a good heart despite his ranting. I personally never saw any redeeming feature in Tristan's character (except to bring out Paris' softer side). Ok, Tristan's parents probably were awful people but that by itself does not explain his unbearably obnoxious personality, not to me. Screwed-up parents or not, i consider him an incurable Jerky Jerk from Jerk Town.

Good point, but with the two female vocalists i think of them along the same lines as the other groups. Now i wonder if Lorelai was one of those teenage girls in the '80s who dressed up like Madonna? Maybe that would be going too far. And it would have to be under-cover from Emily of course.

You know, Lorelai and Rory always make fun of people's tastes in music and it turns out they love the Bangles, what's up with that? The Bangles are not great and i never take them seriously.   I kind of wish if Lane made fun of them or something but she is a fan herself!!!

I think the Bangles were a perfectly fine pop-rock band with a handful of good-great songs and i'm not surprised Lane liked them. Her tastes covered the entire musical spectrum and she wouldn't have any objection to their catchy tunes. Besides, any band that can (temporarily) cause Paris to remove the stick from her butt must have some good points!

Well, given that Luke's excuse is a crappy ex-gf that looked like Elle McPherson, I don't really have much sympathy for him, either. At this point, does he ever act friendly to anyone besides Lorelai? You might say that the other townies who were afraid to talk to Luke's face about his heartbreak just didn't know him like Lorelai did.

Luke acted childish in his rant at Lorelai, so I don’t excuse that act itself. But he did give a sincere apology later on. There are people in this world who act like jerky jerks and think nothing of it. Luke is a grump and the locals accept him as such but even he knows when he has gone too far in a rant. I think he would apologize to other locals as well if he ranted to them that way (Taylor being a likely exception). It is true we have not seen Luke act friendly to the locals at this point in the series. But we know of his future actions as a person who is there for people despite his grumpy attitude and I think it’s fair to guess he has a background of sufficient friendliness. Otherwise he might drive all his customers away and be shunned by the community. Luke is not the type to open up, but aside from his good buddy Lorelai he might open up to a male friend. I think the writers could have given him one male friend, the way Lorelai had Sookie and Rory had Lane; despite his mountain-man tendencies he would be capable of that much. Oh, and maybe I’m crazy but I think the actress who played Rachel was better looking than Elle McPherson (same goes for L.G. and Susanna Hoffs, lead singer of the Bangles).

It's my opinion that nobody is just a jerk and nobody is never a jerk. Everyone has a reason for being a jerk, even if it's not a very good one. You're right, at least Luke knew he was being a jerk, but I thought it said a lot that Paris knew Tristan was a jerk and understood why.

I liked the scenes later on when Kirk, T.J. and Zach sort of evolved into Luke's posse. It was funny how, in the earlier days, Luke's thought processes were usually spoken through Sookie, the original Java Junkie.

I kind of think Luke had a point to his rant. Its not like he just ranted for the sake of ranting.... I think it was more WHO was wearing Rachel's jacket, not the fact that it was Rachel's jacket.

We see in the next few coming Episodes that Luke is really into Lorelai, and the fact she comes in wearing his serious ex-gf's clothes would be a bit of a shock to him (or anyone in that situation if they felt as strongly about someone). If it was someone else I don't think he would have exploded like that.

I agree.

I think he didn't want to explode like that,it was just the shock of it.

by the way lorelai's questions to sookie about rachel and luke demonstrate clearly that she has a thing for luke.she was soo jealous.I liked that scene.thats just rediculous even then they were so into each other.one word by neither of them and we would have Java Junkie a lot sooner.

I think they got together at the right time tho... They had to go through the other relationships which their friendship endured and survived and they got closer over the 4 years. If they got together straight away it wouldnt have been as special

I don't know about jealous, but she obviously cares about him. I mean, his mysterious explosion rolled right off her back, she didn't get mad or shut him out or anything. She just proceeded to get to the bottom of whatever was bothering her friend.

Of course, she spent years and years wishing her parents would blow up at her instead of shutting her out and pushing her away, so maybe as long as he's at least talking to her, she doesn't care if Luke yells.

This is actually one of the first episodes I've saw before I became a fan and it's one of my favorites.

I liked the dynamic of Lorelai where to Rory's Chilton classmates, she's the cool mom who seems likely to let them get away with anything.  Yet, when Madeline and Louise meet Ms. Gilmore, they're in trouble.  At least Paris had a good time and started to warm up to Rory.  Though she tried to defend Tristan, he's still a douche!

The Bangles are underrated.  I'm glad they performed "Hero Takes A Fall", one of my favorite early songs of theirs.  I think their first album was really good.  Then they became a little commercial which in some ways was good but in other ways, wasn't.  I don't really like "Eternal Flames" very much the way they played it now makes the song less sappy and cheesy.

The mystery that is Rachel is unveiled.  Luke had a girlfriend and Lorelai is jealous.  She has a thing for him.  She just doesn't want to admit and when she wore that little jacket, he got mad.  The fact that Luke had a love life prior to Lorelai may seem surprising considering that he was a loner.  It's a good thing that she doesn't know about Anna Nardini until five years later.  And a long-lost daughter who would eventually (via fan fiction) become Lorelai's step-daughter.  That isn't named Gigi.
