1.06 - Rory's Birthday Parties
«
on:
October 16, 2005, 01:02:46 PM »
Summary: Emily (Kelly Bishop) throws Rory (Alexis Bledel) an elegant birthday party and invites Chilton students, but Rory is embarrassed that the kids she doesn't get along with have been forced to come to the party by their own wealthy parents. Rory blows up at her grandmother, then tries to smooth things over by inviting Emily and Richard (Edward Herrmann) to the wild birthday bash that her mom (Lauren Graham) is throwing the following night.

This eppy is one of my favorites! To bad Rory's 21th birthday couldn't be as cute as Rory's 16th.At least then Lorelai and Rory were talking.*sighs*

I hate to change the subject but I'm brand new and haven't figured how how to post a message.
Does anyone recall if Christopher EVER paid child support for Rory. Was it ever mentioned?

It's never been mentioned but Lorelai has said she never asked or expected (among those lines) from Chris so I doubt she asked for money. This would be best asked in the characters thread.

I loved how Richard sat on the porch reading Cosmo or whatever and was genuinely intrigued by it!

Ok, I haven't seen the episode, but I read the transcript. I know it's not the same because it's
way better
when seen, but I still wanted to put input. I really liked the transcript it was awesome! I thought it was great how she had 2 parties. I can't wait to see it!
Yay Gilmore Girls!

I noticed that this episode is supposed to be Rory's 16th birthday, right?Because in the very beginning of the pilot episode Lorelai told Joey that her daughter was 16.Now,the pilot obviously aired before "Rory's Birthday Parties"...so wouldn't Rory be turning 17 in this eppy and not 16?
Unless in the pilot Rory was 15 but Lorelai just said that she was 16.Because say my 16th birthday is next week...well I would tell people that I'm 16 anyway cause a week is close enough.
Maybe we all just assumed that this eppy was Rory's 16 birthday but was really her 17th.Am I making sense here?lol

I guess she did just say Rory was 16 in the pilot because she was going to be pretty soon. Also they wanted to establish right off that she was 16, so they had the line in the pilot. And, it fit in with the premise of the show. We meet them right when Rory is the age that Lorelai was when she had her. If Rory had turned 17 a few episodes later, it wouldn't have worked.
Anyway, I love this episode. I have no plans of ever having any kids, but if I did, I would do the same thing Lorelai did on their birthdays. Wake them up at the same time they were born and tell them the story of their birth. It was so sweet without being too sugary.

Yeah,I kinda figured that.
I would do the same thing with my kids too. That part was so so sweet, but not to sappy like ya said.

This is one of my favorite ones in the first season because even though it was the first season and nothing happened between Lorelai and Luke until the 4th season this episode was really cute the best part was the ice secene because it shows how much Luke cared/cares about Lorelai. And the cake and all of the stories that they were telling about Rory from when she was little. I wonder what it would feel like eating your face?(the cake, not the real one)

This episode was just on ABC Family, and it is so weird watching after everything that's happened. The birthday speech? Still one of the reasons I love Lorelai, but to hear her say how Rory is growing up so fast, and then 5 years later to have Rory behave in her most immature, imo, fashion is strange.
Also, once again, I wish that they had just had Lorelai and Luke get together early. I'm the most apathetic to them being together. Don't hate it, but if they break up, won't be any skin off my teeth. However, if they had gotten together in the first season, then the big build up could be about something else. It wouldn't be so darn
important
anymore. It would be done, it would be just a natural part of everything.
Knowing how Dean and Rory ended up, and worst, how
Dean
ended up it's bittersweet to see him mouthing "Happy Birthday."
My feelings about Emily in that episode are still the same. She does shut people down when they don't live up to her expectations.
It was also interesting to look at the Stars Hollow party. I know that most of the people there were nothing but extras, but I noticed that although there were some kids there, Rory only talked to or sat with Lane or the adults. It makes sense that they wouldn't show her talking to anyone who was just there to make the room look full (extras, not real characters) but was it on purpose that even when she was just in the background, the only person her own age she was grouped with was Lane? I also liked that they admitted she was bad at something, even if it was only ballet.
It was also interesting to note that Lorelai said Christopher called once a week. Now, that's not enough to make him Father of the Year, but it does paint him as not completely uniterested in Rory, even from that early on.
Anyway, those are just the thoughts that went through my head watching this with hindsight.
