I love this one too.  Its cool to see the contrast between Emily and Richards world compared with Lorelai and Rorys world.  You really begin to get the scope of how different the two worlds are.  But of course when Emily and Richard arrive at Rory's party in Stars Hollow the two world come together.

I can't say this is my favorite episode.  I don't know if I could narrow it down to one.  But, I can say without a doubt that my favorite scene on the show happened in this episode.  Lorelai coming into Rory's room and doing the tradition of telling her about her birth.  It was quirky, funny, and sweet.  I have no intention of having kids, but if I change my mind (or lose it) I would love to have a tradition like that.  And, do it the same way Lorelai did, telling my kid about how I wasn't some saintly thing with a glow giving birth, but cursing like a sailor, in pain, ready to just get her/him out.  And, hopefully making that all sound like the most beautiful moment a mother can have.

Yeah, I cried too.  Because that scene in the later episode was so horrible.  Why would they want to taint the memory of this scene with that drek they did in the later episode?

Great episode all around. I think everything works just right. I missed the first 20 minutes of this one again (arghh) but I've seen it before so it's not a huge deal. I thought it was really cute when Emily teases Lorelai about Luke in Lor's bedroom. And sad when Emily gets choked up in the car. And when we see Lorelai looking out the window on Dean and Rory.. she realizes she and her daughter aren't as close as they used to be. Rory's growing up, and not wanting to share everything with her mom anymore. Sad

Yeah, it was sad about Emily when she was about to cry in the car.  It was sad because it was true.

I also loved the shopping scenes. Emily picked out something that Rory would actually like and bought dresses for her and Lorelai. I can only imagine what those dresses looked like before Lorelai adjusted them.

Emily: Did you turn Rory's into a hat?
Lorelai: Nice candles. 6 inches apart?

When Emily and Lorelai were shopping and Lorelai picks up the purse that looks like a giutar and said it would be perfect, was she joking?? Cause to me that is not Rory at all, that's Lorelai!! Anyway, I thought it was funny when Emily and Lorelai were in Lorelai's room and Emily is teasing her about Luke!! But I thought it was really mean of Emily to invite all thoes Chilton kids to the party she threw for Rory!! She should of it least asked!! I was very glad to see Rory get mad at her grandmother like this and I was also very glad that they talked about her quitting ballet class, cause everyone said it the earlier seasons she seemed to perfect, and I think that kind of showed she was not!!

Yeah, I don't really know where this idea that Rory was perfect came from.

Yeah, I don't really know where this idea that Rory was perfect came from.
I think it was built into the script on purpose to show Lorelai's big mistake vs how Rory was not going to end up like her mother.  Rory vs her mother to her grandparents was a fresh slate, a chance to redo, a new opportunity to show the world what the gilmores were all about.  I think that is part of why when Rory does do something like speak her mind in this episode, or like in the one from the 6th season where she has the blow up at her grandmother....she is compared to her mother.  At the same time, any time the topic comes up about failure, they are sure to mention Lorelai's getting pregnant over and over again.  We are made to believe that Rory is perfect just because she has stayed on the path that Lorelai was suppose to...and that Lorelai was before she got pregnant.  That's part of my take on it all anyway.

But, not getting pregnant isn't being perfect.  I can see how Richard and Emily might hold up Rory as being perfect to rub it in Lorelai's face.  She's their perfect angel granddaughter, but they're biased.  So is Lorelai.  What I don't understand is why some people felt it was necessary to show her doing the things she did in later seasons (I don't know if I should mention them in this thread) to prove to the audience that she wasn't perfect.  I mean, she always came off to me as a perfectly normal teenage girl.  Perfectly normal teenage girls (perfectly normal anybody) aren't perfect.  They have flaws like all humans.  Rory loses her temper, she can be impolite, and grouchy.  Like this episode.  Yeah, she had reason to be upset, but perfect behavior would have been to endure the party, make the speech, and afterwards mention in a calm controlled manner that she had been uncomfortable and ask that Emily not do something like that again without clearing it with her first.  Instead, she reacted like she did.  It's not horrible, it's not getting pregnant or anything near that, but it shows that she's flawed and has always been flawed.  She's human.

But it has to do with what the writers want us to believe vs what is reality.  A person really studying the show would be able to look past what the writers are trying to get us to think and look at things more objectively.  The longer a TV show is on(and the more times we view the episodes), the more depth we get to see in a character, the more we see the flaws and the good points...and the more we understand why they act or are the way they do..as well as what the writers are trying to lead us to believe.  At this point in the story, all the characters are very new to us, yet we already can see some fundemental elements that carry us through the whole series.  Rory's supposed perfection is one that we are hand fed-until she falls.  They wanted us to believe Rory could do no wrong because then when she did it would be such a shock.
