'Gilmore Girls' should call it quits
By BILL BRIOUX -- Toronto Sun
May 9th, 2006
Amy Sherman-Palladino calls tonight's Gilmore Girls sixth season finale -- her swan song as the show's driving force -- "the coolest thing we've ever done." The question is: Can and should this eccentric series survive without her?
I say cue the fat lady, bring out the fork, strike the sets. This show is toast with or without Palladino.
The last two or three seasons, Gilmore Girls has almost dared viewers to change the channel. Every character on the series was fluent in smartass. Even the extras had snappy answers to stupid questions. The rat-tat-tat patter, clever at first, became enraging.
Like Northern Exposure's Cicely, Alaska, Gilmore's Stars Hollow is Eccentricville, U.S.A. After a while, shut up with the Dorothy Parker dialogue already.
What saved Gilmore Girls from Exposure's premature flame out was great acting, especially from Lauren Graham as Lorelai and Kelly Bishop and Edward Herrmann as the over-the-top grandparents. They kept the show grounded and real, allowing Sherman-Palladino to spin her flighty fantasy world.
Doing this show without Sherman-Palladino will be like taking Aaron Sorkin out of The West Wing. It will create a different show. That may not be a bad thing; it might be refreshing to see these characters drop the know-it-all blather. Or -- and this is the bigger risk -- it may become Everwood dull.
New network CW probably needs these Gilmore Girls to snare WB viewers next fall. For what -- to string out the Luke and Lorelai romance for another season? Did they learn nothing from those one-too-many seasons of That '70s Show, Friends or Will & Grace? You go, Girls.

Television shows lose their creators all the time. The new executive producer, David Rosenthal, wrote "Super Cool Party People", which is one of the few episodes I liked in season 6. I think season 7 should be fine in his hands. As far as ASP referring to the finale as "the coolest thing we've ever done" -- yep, it was time for her to go. The season finale was, quite frankly, not that good in comparison to previous GG season finales. I don't know anything about the author of this article, but . . .

. . .clearly they don't like the show. Not good for the last two or three seasons? I'm not a big fan of season 6, but season 5 was outstanding.

This is true. I think there's a huge mistake in thinking that only one person can do a show. People start to deify a creator, and it can go to their heads. Plus, it's not like the season has started and there's evidence it's going downhill. I also enjoyed SCPP. One of the best episodes of season 6. The critics and reporters could at least wait until season 7 airs before they declare a done deal that the show is going to lose all its charm or banter or literary references (from another article). I mean, I've had my criticisms of episodes, and I can say things about season 3, but I don't think it's certain the show will be rotten just because ASP isn't there.
And, I liked Everwood.

I agrees somewaht that it was better before, but season one isn't at all. the rythm of the show didn't get really good untill season 2 and it's gotten progressively better in 3, 4, and 5. this last year has sucked big time. there were like only 3 episodes i really liked. i think a fresh face is gping to turn out to be a good thing.

well, although i LOVE the show and i will keep watching it NO MATTER WHAT, i kinda have to agree to that! any scenes that have lauren/lorelai, kelly/emily and Edward/richard in it are the ones i enjoy the most! cuz they are just great actors. i am not so sure if i would looove the show as much as i do if it wasn t for lauren!!! Lauren makes the show for me! she greata and amazing and maaaany other things! but i will be very open minded and see what season 7 will bring....and also still hoping that there is the tiniest chance that there gonna be more than 7 seasons...who knows?! maybe if season 7 will be veeeeery succesful

Are you kidding me? Season One has got to be one of my favourite seasons ever!! I love its primative beginnings as it establishes itself. everything is still fresh and innocent.

hmm.. I never knew The Guy wrote Super Cool Party People... (yeah, I call him The Guy cause I'm too lazy to learn his name) Anyway, but yeah, I love that episode. It was one of the few that made me laugh.
I know that season 6 wasn't the best, but I agree with who ever said it: I'll watch it as long as it's on.
Now I have a question.. what was up with Friends, That 70s Show, and even Will and Grace? I loved ALL 10 seasons of Friends. I was extremely depressed when I heard That 70s Show was ending cause through out the years, I think it has gotten better and more funny. And though I might not have watched too much of Will and Grace but I still thought it was great. I loved Jack. So whats up with all of the flaming of good shows? That kind of made me mad. I mean it is known that Friends was an amazing show, a classic, and loved everywhere. So I guess if you are putting GIlmore Girls in the same category as friends, that's a good thing.

think of it this way, would you have GG go on,terrible show, and have a bad rep,or have it end on 7 seasons with a fairly good rep?that is something we should think about.
and giant GG fan,i love freinds and that 70's show too!

I agree with this. I don't want a show to stay on just for the sake of staying on. Think of ER. It was one of the best shows on tv. Then it stayed on, and on, and on, and on, and on, until even some of its strongest supporters are asking for it to end. I stopped watching last season (or maybe the one before -when Noah Wyle left) because I just couldn't take it. I don't want to see Rory's daughter enter Chilton or worse, Yale.

The special guest appearance title is in consideration of Edward Herrmann's career. He was probably the biggest star when the show first premiered, with all his movie and tv credits. It's not really about the age of the actor/character. They wanted to draw attention to the fact that the show had a distinguished actor, not just a bunch of newbies.
