I can't believe that. That's really appalling because didn't they call it the Lauren Graham system or something like that? She really deserves an emmy, The nominees really aren't even close to Lauren Graham.
I KNOW! i was really disapointed when i saw the nominations
weeeeell, maybe next year!

I put this in the Lauren/Lorelai appreciation thread as well.
Poor Lauren! She didn't get the nomination even though almost ALL the Emmy buzz was about her. On Good Morning America, before the nominations were announced, they talked about her and how she had been so underrated in previous years. The TV Guide columnist that was on said she should have a good chance. All the entertainment journalists are shocked, they had predicted her to get the nomination. Especially in light of some of the other nominees -- some good actresses that I've enjoyed before, but shouldn't necessarily be lauded in their current roles. Lauren must be disappointed, especially because of all the pre-announcement buzz. I've heard her say before that she is the "Susan Lucci" of the primetime Emmys (except that instead of not winning, she doesn't even get nominated). This makes me wonder which episode the voters viewed. According to the new rules, they had to view an episode of the top 10 candidates (which Lauren was one of). Since Gilmore Girls is both a comedy and a drama, it doesn't fit solely into either category. After the first season, GG campaigned under the drama category. When that didn't work, they switched over and began campaigning their submissions under the comedy category (which has been equally fruitless). If you think about season 6, Lorelai was unhappy for most of it. During the first half, she was miserable because she wasn't speaking with Rory and during the second half she was upset about the engagement postponement. It's hard to imagine an episode this season where she was more funny than dramatic. It's too bad they couldn't have viewed episodes from previous seasons!

I heard that she submitted Partings, which was good work for her (I mean her acting was stellar) but it's not a comedic episode. I hardly think the thing that sticks in people's minds is her antics at the dinner trying to distract Lynnie.
But, I read something somewhere that I think is a good point. (Or I heard it, I don't recall). This isn't about who's the best actor or what's the best show. It's about what a certain group of people think are best. It doesn't take anything away from either Lauren Graham or the show that they don't get nominated. Especially with so many people disagreeing with that, not only fans but critics as well.
And, all award shows are about much more than actual feelings about the quality of the shows. You have actors who get nominated because of the sympathy vote (like when an actor dies or when they leave a show) you get make up wins (do people really believe out of all of his performances, the very first time Al Pacino actually deserved an award was for Scent of a Woman? Although I did like that part, and have never seen any Godfather films), you get nods for things that are clear award bait.
I still think the insurmountable hurdle was the show being on the WB. The big three networks are the safe choice, so anything on ABC, NBC, or CBS has a better shot. Fox also has broken in. FX and HBO are edgy networks, and the Emmy voters can say they aren't old fogies but appreciate a show that pushes the envelope. Not that any of the shows on these networks might not have legitimate reasons for being their. I'm hyped about House, myself. Unfortunately, the WB is still seen as a teen network. It (according to the Emmys) produces fun fluff for juveniles, not quality programming.

Stupid stupid stupid!!!
STUPID STUPID STUPID STUPID!!!
They should create a NEW category for shows like Gilmore Girls that don't quite fit the drama and comedey categories. They shall call it
Dramodey
, and Gilmore Girls might actually win stuff because it's the best ever
Dramodey
in the entire world (let alone all of TVLand).

I agree with this. There are shows that don't fit neatly into one category, and there should be a place for them. But, it would still have to be on another network.

I have been disgusted with the Emmys for years. Decades, even. I agree with many of your comments. In particular, this year's crop is disappointing.
Specifically:
In the outstanding comedy series nominations -
Curb Your Enthusiasm
is tedious and the other four shows are formulaic. I
HATE
laugh tracks.
In the outstanding drama series nominations -
24
is a comic strip,
House
is the same show every week, and
Grey's Anatomy
, the worst of the lot, has dopey stereotype characters, predictable story lines, and corny, derivative dialogue. I confess I don't watch
The West Wing
or
The Sopranos
as I have no interest in the subject matter and therefore have no opinion on them. But as long as the Emmy people are looking at HBO shows, their omission of
Deadwood
is absolutely criminal, as it is by far the most brilliantly creative and impactful show on television today.
In the outstanding lead actress in a comedy series -
Stockard Channing is genuinely brilliant, should run away with this award, and she is probably a better actress than Lauren Graham. The others, however vary from competent (Debra Messing) to quirky (Jane Kaczmarek) to just plain lame (Lisa Kudrow and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss).
In the outstanding lead actress in a drama series -
Lauren would have very tough competition from at least three of the nominees. Frances Conroy in particular was terrific in
Six Feet Under
. Kyra Sedgwick is superb on
The Closer
, and her nomination flies in the face of shows and performers from obscure networks not being noticed. Mariska Hargitay (Jayne Mansfield's dotter, in case you didn't know this) was outstanding on
ER
, but I confess I haven't seen her on this show. Geena Davis has been good enough in other shows, but I've never seen
Commander in Chief
, nor have I ever seen
The West Wing
, as noted above, and don't even know who IS Allison Janney.
Specifically: I think
Gilmore Girls
should have been nominated as outstanding drama over at least three of the shows which were, and Lauren should have been nominated above four of the five in the comedy category and/or above at least two in the dramatic actress nominees.
Footnote is:
I certainly hope
Partings
was not one of the eps submitted to the Emmy people for consideration. It reeked, and I would not be able to blame them for scorning the show if THIS was offered as an example of its excellence.

Well, I read on TWoP that Partings was the episode that was submitted for her best actress category. And, Friday Night's Alright For Fighting, The Prodigal Daughter Returns, We've Got Magic To Do, and Fight Face were submitted for the shot at best comedy series.
I think another problem is I heard they're cracking down on the definition of comedy. Like last year, Desperate Housewives had some pretty serious episodes (especially for Marcia Cross) but she got nominated in the comedy category. They were able to fudge and say that the show itself was a comedy, they just felt her best work came in the dramatic episodes. Now, they really have to be comedic episodes. There haven't been that many this season, and no matter what kind of work Lauren did in Partings, that was the least comedic episode of all.

Really? Partings? That was the least comedic episode! They should have put something else. Partings was the SAD episode!

I'm definately boycotting the emmys- Lauren deserves an award, or at least a nomination damnit, so much more than some of those people.
As for the genre issue, I'd say Gilmore Girls is more of a comedic drama, than a dramatic comedy. This year especially, it got a lot darker it seems. They should campaign in the drama category. Nothing against comedies, but I think it heightend thier level of respect.

I agree with you!! I was really mad when they didn't say her name in that category. She's been on the same show for 6 going on 7 years now. Not many other actors can say they've been on a show for that long. They should have submitted 'The real Paul Anka' and not partings for her, because that episode is really funny. They knew she'd be up for the comedy category, and not the drama category, and yet they picked the most dramatic and least funny episode. Some people nominated, like 4 out 5 in the best comedy actress category, don't even have their shows on anymore. If this is the last year for GG, maybe she could have a chance next year, and maybe this season will be really funny, so then they will have a great episode to send in for her, and she will finally be able to win and emmy like she deserves! I'm probably not going to watch the emmys this year.

The reason I think she picked Partings, instead of a more comedic episode, was she felt that her best acting in the season overall was in Partings, even if it was dramatic. And, before, it was okay to use a dramatic episode for a comedy category because it was just the acting overall, not the genre you're acting was in. In fact, I'd wager before that comedy actors who submitted their work in one of the more dramatic episodes had a better shot. It would show that they could do more than just comedy (not that comedy is all that easy, but the stereotype is drama is harder, and dramatic actors are better), drama episodes are more likely to be Emmy bait than comedy. But, they started cracking down. It's not enough to just pick any episode no matter what type. If you submit in the comedy, you have to showcase a funny episode.
But, I agree with nodaybuttuesday that the show should be in the drama category, since they won't make a dramedy one. To me, this show has never been a comedy. It's a light drama.
But, I still think, no matter where they put it in, what new rules they have, or what other attempts, being on the WB is the most insurmountable obstacle to getting a nomination. The Academy voters have an image in their minds of what the network offers, and nothing will change that.

I like GG, but, let's face it. Many of us (fans since the beginning) were disappointed in last season. I think both Lauren and Kelly deserved nominations, but, this past season, the shows PTB tried too hard to make the show award-worthy and it didn't work.
They need to make the best show possible for the fans and not worry about awards and emmys. Its all just politics anyway.
