Both! He openly admitted to Roty that he didn't mean to spend so much on the basket but the angrier Dean got the more he enjoyed it. He did not openly admit he wanted to eat with Rory but that was certainly part of his plan.

I've noticed that people who are anti-Jess seem to think he was more interested in antagonizing Dean, while pro-Jess Lits think it was more that he liked Rory.

Noticed that, too. I think that you can tell Jess went to spend time with Rory, but how angry Dean got, that he just kept bidding. I honestly think that he didn't do it to cause problems with them, or to make her mad at him, he just let his jealousy get the best of him. But not by far am I rooting for Dean in this battle. He went to her Mother... HER MOTHER! Sure, he was thinking "Loreali- Rory's best friend."
Uh uh dean. He should have thought, " Loreali- Rory's MOTHER!" It was really bad that he had to go to the person who he knew hated Jess. Loreali, though her mother and best friend, picks people to choose with, and sticks with them. She did that with dean, and the opposite with Jess.

When Rory asked why he kept bidding on the basket, Jess plainly stated that the angrier Dean got the more he enjoyed it. He also brought up Dean's height as a source of his own resentment!
Dean made a serious mistake going to Lorelai but i felt sympathy for him anyway. He was upset about Jess when in fact his biggest problem was Rory, who was falling for Jess.

LOVE this episode!
it epitomizes every literati and java junkie's dream!
=]
i thought it was nice of luke to agree to buy lorelai's basket when miss patty tried to hook lorelai up with all those men. even though she begged him to do it and he acted a little reluctant, we all know he wanted the chance to have a picnic lunch with lorelai. quality time, one on one..a chance to earn some brownie points [as if he really needs any more]. i thought it was sweet.
i also agree that jess bidding on rory's basked was more so that he could spend some time with rory than trying to piss off dean. jess is a fighter and gets into plenty of trouble, but i think he felt his time was more well spent talking to rory than pestering dean. his motives were good, he knew that the relationship was starting to get a little stale [as we can see by paying close attention in these episodes] and he wanted to be on rory's mind when dean was out of the picture at last. i wish jess would bid on my basket=]
i thought the sookie/jackson storyline in this episode was absolutely adorable. poor jackson was trying to hint at moving in together but sookie in all her clumsy, airheaded glory just completely didn't catch on. i thought it was pretty funny to watch jackson being so stubborn and refusing to bid on sookie's basket. even more hilarious was the fact that KIRK ended up with the basket. then when jackson and sookie talked everything over and jackson was trying to buy back the basket from kirk...that was so funny. sometimes kirk just does things to be difficult, i think.
this episode was cute. i loved it all.

The thing i especially like about Sookie & Jackson in this episode is that despite the misunderstanding they talked it out openly (mostly thanks to Jackson thinking clearly) and resolved it. Plus they managed to be cute and funny and sweet in the process. Unlike a certain other so-called grown-up couple who got together in the later seasons, they did not allow it to fester and get blown out of all proportion due to a complete lack of communication.

I think I won't sound popular here, but I totally disagree with the majority on Dean/Jess thing. Jess acts like a brat and I only wonder why Dean could not repeat the thing that happened at that dance party with Tristan. To me...and it's a personal opinion...Jess is such a jerk...I mean he's kinda cool being black sheep of the family and stuff but you can't behave like that with no consequence and what really made me surprised is this Dean moment when he was just standing there not daring to do the basket thing comparing to the moment in the previous episode when he got her a car. Man, this was magic and now....
I also dig the part with Lane....but it's so so hard to see all her struggling. I wish they had Gil already by now, man.....awwwww....he's the STAR there!
Luke doesn't disappoint again, dudes!

Well, things are a little different now. Dean's getting a little insecure and no longer takes her fidelity for granted. I mean, going to a girls bf is a pretty pathetic way to find out how she feels about you, but it's useless if not even her best friend knows.
Then again. swiping a virgin's offering to her boyfriend at a Deliverance mating ritual is pretty pathetic, too. Though I have to say Jess has been pretty quick at navigating the town's habits and prejudices to advance himself or get a laugh. Has he already pegged Rory as "rules girl?" I mean, that basket thing could have been humiliating for Jess if she hadn't been hidebound enough to go to lunch with him over her boyfriend's objections for the sake of tradition.

I have to say this tradition of SH is kind of cute but also set the world backward! It makes me think of when people auction themselves in charity events, you never know who's going to bid on you and you can fall in the wrong place! It's such a put down for women!
Rory here showed the early signs of being insensitive and selfish, many other words come to mind but let's stop there. Up until this point Dean was nothing but a perfect boyfriend and he deserved better from Rory. Jess seemed to enjoy being Dean's pain far more than being with Rory. He also is jealous of Dean with his "he is so tall" comment. Hey, i have always thought that Jess has some issues with his height! Poor guy!
I kind of like the Emily/Lorelai/Rory conversation. I liked how Emily took Lorelai's side and i love how that freaked Lorelai out. "I need to shower", she said! I know what she means!
Rory's fight with Lorelai had nothing to do with the fact that Dean went to her mother, it was more of her knowing that she liked Jess and that she was being un-true to Dean. So when Lorelai brought the issue up, as the say goes: if you are under attack, attack back! or something like that. Rory knew she was wrong but she didn't like it so she tried to fault someone else.
