1  Episode Discussion / Season 3 / Re: 3.19 - Keg! Max! on: August 07, 2008, 06:29:02 pm
If I was Lindsay I would have broken up with Dean after this party. Rory did come out of the room upset, but as far as anyone knows she just had a fight with her boyfriend over his not graduating or something. Dean didn't know the circumstances which you could say justified his actions, therefore they are unjustified.
Your boyfriend's ex starts crying so he goes all macho and tries to beat the other guy up not knowing the full situation? Alarm bells should be ringing. Maybe that's why Lindsay and Dean got married so early? We don't know who proposed. Maybe she did, or insinuated it, hoping that once she was his wife he would finally forget about Rory.
2  Episode Discussion / Season 4 / Re: 4.07 - Love Me or Louvre Me (a.k.a. The Festival of Living Art) on: August 07, 2008, 06:23:16 pm
Episodes like this make me wish that I lived in Stars Hollow. It's quirky and bizarre and very, very cool.

To me, the GG story is still on through fan fiction.  I don't think it's really over until the fans say it is.  I've been a fan for a few months so far and I've been watching the re-runs through ABC Family and review each episode from the first 6 seasons.

What did happen to Dean right in the end?  Is he still in Stars Hollow?  Did he leave?  Is he still pining for Rory?

It won't continue if I write a piece of fan fiction in which everyone dies really horrifically. Let's see.... Dean after seeing Lorelai and Luke together in the last episode, snaps. He ties them both up and kills them. Somehow power tools are involved, hammers and circular saws, well he is a carpenter. He waits for Rory to come home, he knows she's back in town and kills her Jack the Ripper style including removing some of her organs. The Girls are dead. Emily stops by to check out plans for the Dragonfly Spa and is strangled using her pearls. Sookie as she is pregnant is spared being killed but spends the rest of her days in a pysch ward saying over and over again that she has "ennui".
Viola.
All I'm saying is that this was a show with several writers, creators, directors and actors. Only they should have the right to continue what they've started. It's their child, written for the fans not by the fans. Anything else doesn't count. Would you walk into a uni literature class and start debating the merits of a cliff notes version of Othello? I mean it's bascially the same thing right? It has the same characters, the prose is a little different but what's the real problem?
On that note which is the real fan fic cannon to discuss here? There's a thread on fanfiction.net discussing the merits of stories in which Lorelai and Rory are incestuous lesbian lovers. It's disgusting but I guess it's just as valid a direction to take as any other.
4  Episode Discussion / Season 5 / Re: 5.07 - You Jump, I Jump, Jack on: August 06, 2008, 08:32:03 pm
Last time we saw her act on impulse like this was when she skipped school at Chilton to visit Jess in NY and missed Lorelai's graduation!
Maybe Lorelai's right in that her judgement is only ever clouded when it comes to her boyfriends. That's a little sad and kind of diminishes her character...

Unpopular opinions....
1) The Virtual Gilmore Season is not real and I'd rather it never be mentioned ever, ever again on these boards. Or if it has to be on it's own little individual board so the rest of us can ignore it as simply fan fiction.
2) Marty was brought back as DR had no decent ideas or characters of his own so he stole Amy's.....
6  Gilmore Girls / General Discussion / Re: Reading Thread - Cause it's still sexy! on: August 05, 2008, 04:23:56 am
If you want more suggestions....

Atonement by Ian McEwan. (The movie's awesome but read the book first, it gives greater character insight) and
The Timetraveller's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.  (Slightly explicit so perhaps not a good choice as there's no age limit on the book club, but it is fantastic and is currently being turned into a movie which won't be anywhere near as good so get it if you can).

If you've already finalised your list I suggest the Notebook. It amazing and it's fairly short, so you won't have many issues of attrition or members falling behind.
7  Gilmore Girls / Appreciation Threads / Re: Lorelai Gilmore / Lauren Graham Appreciation on: August 05, 2008, 04:08:36 am
As an aside in Diane Keaton's defense, she works with what she's given. Roles for 60+ women in Hollywood are few and far between. If she's acting over the top, it's partially the director's fault. That's what he asked for, that's what he got and he didn't choose to reshoot so it must have tied in with his vision.

I liked Because I Said So. I knew it was a sappy movie and I expected it to be. I think that Lauren's part was unmemorable, but she's torn isn't she? Just like Alexis, she needs to break the Gilmore stereotype and she can only do that through playing different parts. 'Selling out' but getting an audience to notice she exists often isn't a bad trade-off. I think her part in Bad Santa illustrated that.

Sorry to post a downer, but Solzhenitsyn just died. Paris references him in season 6 when she's newspaper editor. Rory likens the offices to the gulag and Paris replied that "Do you think Solzhenitsyn could have written One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich on a yoga retreat?"
He wrote some amazing books and won a nobel prize for lit.

First Norman Mailer and now this. *sigh*
9  Episode Discussion / Season 5 / Re: 5.22 - A House is Not a Home on: August 04, 2008, 12:56:30 am
Of all the offsider/town residents, Mrs Kim was almost unique in 'evolving'. Do doubt owing to Lane's more central role in the story arcs and her need to have her own story evolve. In contrast, Babette, Miss Patty, Taylor, Kirk and even Sookie are somewhat stagnant. Sookie does go from single friend to married mother and looses some of her clumsiness, but aside from her season 4 freak out her persona was already somewhat maternal and it doesn't seem a huge leap.

Don't watch this episode while playing the org's drinking game (for those over 16, 18 or 21 depending on your nation's laws).
Lorelai finally tells Emily to shut up which I think happens to tally up with "drink everything in sight" lol.

Bingbong, I tell myself that they must have just been really amazing artists and actresses and got in on a scholarship for those abilities alone, but it takes A LOT of convincing.
And I don't have to like the Tweedles as they're DR's creation and have absolutely nothing to do with ASP.

Second unpopular opinion, with the exception of a few episodes (mainly at the very end), in season 4.... Nothing happens.

Saw might outperform FOG but I don't think they're competing for the same audience, so it would probably do better regardless of what week it was released (not because it's a better or worse movie, but just because teenagers go to the movies a lot).
I wouldn't worry about it "stealing" possible FOG viewers.

Lol, I know! Yale's supposed to be the best of the best and the greatest oneliners these two can come up with include "You are just crazy about popcorn" or something similarly mindless.
14  Gilmore Girls / Show and Cast Member News / Re: Alexis Bledel to Star in "The Good Guy" with Scott Porter on: August 02, 2008, 12:19:35 am
I agree that the Jessicas and Rachel are there for their sex appeal not acting ability per se but the list was designed to name actresses with exposure, large fan bases, people who are draw cards and would get second or top billing simply for being in the film. The original thing I was debating was that if you asked people on the street who they liked, who they'd go see a movie for, what would they say? Of course it's going to come back to popularity and exposure. The majority of consumers won't go "well I find the works of Jessica Alba stilted, I much prefer a movie shot in the film noir style while enjoying a glass of merlot after a polo match. Preferably directed by so and so who has never sold out and made a blockbuster. Added points for it being in ancient Aramaic, without subtitles of course" They make bad movies but people still go and see them because they're household names.  Alexis isn't yet. She might be, but she's not yet. And the original point was that as she isn't, people won't go and see this purely for her, outside of the GG realm of course.

I actually don't know that she does. Don't get me wrong, I love her work but you're not really looking at this objectively posting on a gg fansite. If you were to poll randoms on the street about their top ten favourite twenty-something year old actresses (and that's a fairly specific category) I don't know how many people would suggest her without you implanting the idea first. "What about Alexis Bledel?" Oh yeah, ok, they'd say.
Otherwise you're top responses would be Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Rachel Bilson, maybe America Ferrera as she's still getting prime time tv exposure, etc etc. The people who grace the cover of OK Magazine etc each week rather than Alexis who is still relatively unknown outside of Gilmore Girls and who as a result I don't think anyone except Gilmore Girls fans would go to see just because its her.
